The practice experience spans a wide range of both open and restricted medical schemes, corporates (PRMA valuations and wellness projects), various funding trusts and healthcare bodies with diverse needs and service delivery models.
Summary Statement
This is a unique opportunity for a motivated individual to develop their technical skills, learn from more experienced technicians and accelerate the advancement of their actuarial, analytical and data science capabilities. The successful candidate will be based in Johannesburg and will be expected to provide support across a broad spectrum of healthcare analytics projects. In the role, the successful candidate will be expected to work as part of a small consulting team across a variety of projects, providing support to and learning from the consultants while also working independently on some analyses and deliverables. Candidates can continue with their post graduate actuarial qualification through NMG’s actuarial study assistance policy.
Role
Actuarial Analyst / Senior Analyst, Data & Analytics
- Managing and executing a variety of tasks to a very high standard to support healthcare analytics projects for different sets of clients in the South African healthcare industry
- Extracting, manipulating and reconciling data from multiple sources and reports; Updating, maintaining and enhancing models, dashboards and reports
- Analysing data to identify key issues, develop and recommend solutions, and drive data-based decision-making
- Building subject matter expertise over time including your knowledge of medical scheme products and other healthcare financing structures, and your knowledge of and ability to use various analytical tools and techniques to advise on these products and structures
- Living the NMG values of Curiosity, Collaboration, Go for It and Make it Count in all interactions with the consulting team, clients and the broader NMG business
Competencies, Qualifications & Experience
- A recent tertiary qualification in actuarial science (preferred) or a statistics, mathematics or data science-related degree with a strong academic record
- Up to 3 years' experience in the South African healthcare or insurance market (note: recent graduates and those graduating at the end of 2024 without work experience will also be considered for the Analyst role)
- Strong analytical and problem solving capabilities, including being able to apply learned skills to new and unique analyses
- Ability to engage and collaborate in a team to achieve individual and team goals; A high level of enthusiasm for the industry, a positive attitude, energetic approach, curiosity and willingness to learn
- Self-managing with the ability to work independently, remain flexible and prioritise competing demands and organise workflow clearly
- Communication and interpersonal skills including being able to convey and explain information, coherently and confidently, both verbally and in writing
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Knowledge of analysis and statistical software such as SQL, R/ R-Shiny, SAS, Python is desirable
