- The Tax Technical Accountant is responsible for the preparation, review and submission of VAT returns and VAT compliance and advisory services for the TFG Group (mainly in South Africa).
- This role will be assisting the Tax Manager in minimising the Group’s VAT expense and controlling the administration and accounting records for VAT. The role will also assist with VAT apportionment calculations.
- Reporting to the Tax Manager, this role will perform all VAT related deliverables in accordance to tax/VAT policies and governance for TFG entities; whilst supporting the Tax Manager in the development of tax policies and guidelines for TFG.
- Finally, as and when required, the role will also assist with other tax matters within the TFG companies in South Africa
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with indirect and direct tax legislation and changes in requirements, understanding and interpreting of relevant legislation and analysing the impact on the Group;
- Monitor and perform the VAT compliance activities for the Group including the preparation of VAT returns and provisions for the divisions as well all relevant VAT calculations and necessary adjustments;
- Ensure that required VAT liabilities are provisioned for in SAP;
- Ensure payment to SARS is tracked and monitored monthly;
- Prepare adjusting journals for changes in VAT liabilities;
- Review VAT rates on entry to a country and the required supporting documents;
- Take required action to minimise the risk and tax/VAT liabilities across the divisions;
- Prepare monthly submission of Dividends withholding tax returns, VAT reconciliations and VAT reasonability tests;
- Reconcile tax creditors and investigate differences and payment clearing accounts in the general ledger monthly;
- Monitor correctness of assessments and receipt of VAT refunds;
- Adhere to and perform all VAT returns and pre-payments for the TFG divisions;
- Where required, apply and perform all VAT apportionments;
- Reconcile trial balance for all VAT related payments and programmes;
- Assist in complying with tax audits and maintaining proficiency in the application of the relevant tax legislation;
- Review, maintain and streamline document retention and filing for purposes of tax audits;
- Prepare all tax disclosure requirements for external reporting;
- Research and provide advice on tax matters as and when required by management;
- Support the Tax Manager and/or external consultants on tax related projects.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Represent the Group on industry bodies and forums;
- Engage with all relevant stakeholders, locally and abroad (e.g. in country revenue authorities);
- Engage with relevant Tax authorities to clear findings and queries;
- Advise business on tax-related matters.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum 3 years experience post qualification in the field of VAT
- Completed articles at an accounting firm
- Experience in the practical application of relevant VAT legislation
- B.Com graduate with Accounts III and Income Tax as majors.
- Knowledge and understanding of VAT and Income Tax legislation
- CA(SA) will be an advantage
