Electrical Projects Manager
The Electrical Projects Manager, reporting to the General Manager, will be responsible for the management and delivery of land-based electrical engineering and infrastructure projects. The incumbent shall direct and manage all manufacturing and project execution phases from planning to close-out stage in an economical and efficient manner. This includes management of direct reports, seconded workers (internal service providers) and sub-contractors on site and ensuring they carry out work in accordance with company and customer policies, statutory requirements, specified drawings, specifications, codes of practice, standards, quality plans and programs, within timeline and budget whilst maintaining safety, health, security, industrial relations and discipline within responsibility area.
Duties & Responsibilities
Tasks will include:
- Administration and Support Services
- Updating of procedures and other relevant documentation towards improved project execution maturity level and ISO compliance.
- Manage Projects in strict compliance with our Project Management Framework.
- Enforce disciplined administration within project teams.
- Provide input to the project portfolio master schedule.
- Detailed project schedule updates and monthly reports.
- Project Planning
- Prepare Tenders for electrical installation contracts and provide input during tender stage for other electrical engineering contracts.
- Define the scope and deliverables of the project in collaboration with Commercial Team upon Contract Establishment.
- Create a detailed work plan which identifies and sequences the activities needed to successfully complete the project.
- Confirm the resources (time, money, equipment, etc) required to complete the project.
- Develop a schedule for project completion that effectively allocates the resources to the activities.
- Coordinate and chair project planning meetings and project site visits to liaise on customer requirements and agree in-house prioritisation of project activities.
- Review the project schedule with senior management, key resources and customer representatives; revise the schedule as required.
- Determine the objectives and measures upon which the project will be evaluated at its completion.
- Cost Control
- Monthly budget for cost and sales.
- Progress versus budget - costs.
- Progress versus budget - sales.
- Correctness of Site Instruction estimates.
- Final forecast sales.
- Extension of time etc.
- Invoicing activities with assistance of Finance Department.
- Project Resourcing
- In consultation with the appropriate managers, identify, agree and allocate project staff with appropriate skills for the project activities.
- Contract qualified consultants to work on the project as appropriate.
- Ensure that all project personnel receive an appropriate orientation to the project and client organization.
- Communicate and Manage project agreed deliverables within the project team.
- Financial Management.
- Manage cost within Budget limits.
- Enforce strict adherence to Site Instruction and Early Notifications.
- Maintaining clear commercial lines and visibility.
- Implement strict overtime and expenses controls - Control the out of budget spend to absolute minimum.
- Regular review of Suppliers and Agreements.
- Implement/maintain effective management of HDSA capital project expenditure.
- Actively involved in and responsible to identify and register legal, technical, commercial, schedule and execution risks.
- Development of mitigation plans and the implementation thereof.
- Effective People Management
- All normal line manager functions and deliberate team engagements.
- Performance Management for the team.
- Communicate departmental goals and individual/team roles, responsibilities and expectations to achieve these goals.
- Optimum staffing, resource loading and forecasting.
- Develop contingency plans to deal with strikes and labour disruptions.
- Proactive succession planning and skills transfer with due consideration to employment equity targets.
- Individual staff development plans are created, agreed and implemented for key roles.
- Close liaison with the HR manager to ensure smooth contractor and workforce relations.
- Operations and Construction Management
- Co-ordinate operations and construction within conditions of contract through regular integration meetings and scheduling.
- Strong focus on LTIFR and TRIR.
- Excellent Engineering team liaison towards minimal technical queries.
- Regular Schedule updates with the correct detail to monitor progress.
- Interfacing with the Site managers to generate the relevant commercial letters and notices.
- Monitoring and enforcing regular review of the manufacturing and construction schedule sequence and progress.
- Ensure well-co-ordinated people and equipment placement and related logistics.
- Document Control and Quality
- With the support of the Quality Manager, deliver high quality products and installations.
- Manage deliberate quality review sessions and interventions.
- Develop stage-gate controls and/or certification throughout manufacturing, construction and testing/commissioning of the products and project.
- Ensure procedures are prepared for completion of construction, punch-listing and rectification of defects in co-operation with the Commissioning Engineer and the Customer.
- Standardised handover system and documentation.
- Enforce adherence to document control and data storage.
- Develop and maintain knowledge management processes and central data centre for dissemination of learnings to relevant team members.
- Customer and Supplier Satisfaction
- Maintain good relations with all customer and suppliers thus enhancing our image and Products in the Market Place.
- Build partnerships with key suppliers.
- Ensure that products, installations and delivery date comply with tender stipulations.
- Manage expectations through effective two-way open communication with Customers and relevant stakeholders.
- Manage project close-out and post-implementation review processes to ensure effective completion following project handover.
Desired Experience & Qualification
Qualifications and Experience
- A recognised tertiary electrical engineering qualification/T4 or equivalent.
- 10 years exposure to the electrical and instrumentation industry as Site Manager or Project Management.
- Project and contract management experience.
- Working knowledge of the OHS Act legislation will be an advantage.
- Computer literacy and competent in using MS Excel and MS Project or Primavera P6.
- Good communication skills and assertive business acumen.
- Ability to work under pressure.
