The WIC Pharmacist Assistant exists at Medipost Pharmacy, Gezina reporting to the Pharmacy Manager.
1. Work Output
- Evaluation of patients' medicine-related needs determining the indication, safety, and effectiveness of the therapy.
- Prepares medication by reviewing and interpreting Rx, detecting therapeutic incompatibilities (when applicable) and signed by a Pharmacist.
- Dispenses medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals and signed by a Pharmacist.
- Accurately interpret Rx and act in a professional and responsible manner, within legal requirements in accordance with GPP and SAPC.
- Ensure accurate picking, packing, labeling, and checking of medicines and be aware of common dosages as well as important drug interactions.
- Correct errors on Rx rejected by medical aid as per SOPs.
- Accurately capture and dispense medicine as prescribed on a valid Rx as per SOPs, signed by a Pharmacist.
- Ensure all medications are checked for accuracy by a Pharmacist and signed before it is issued to a patient.
- Assist with re-packing of medicines approved by the Responsible Pharmacist.
- Assist with the distribution and control of stock of Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines or scheduled substances.
- Assist with the ordering of medicines and scheduled substances up to, and including, Schedule 6 according to an instruction of a person authorized in terms of the Medicines Act to purchase or obtain such medicines or scheduled substances.
- Check-in, put-away or return dispensary stock to Receiving.
- Manage and maintain over-the-counter medicine, order, replenish, and stock adequate inventory.
- Ensure stock is checked for damages and expiry dates.
- Ensure any stock discrepancies are recorded on the documents provided as per SOPs.
- Re-stock consumables when required.
- Participate in regular cycle counts and annual/bi-annual stock take.
- Process all paperwork for accurate submission of claims to medical aids as per SOPs.
- Ensure accurate and timely authorization of patient medicine at medical aid as per SOPs.
- Maintain patient profiles on the system (also includes merging) as per SOPs.
- Take note of any messages on the patient profile and take suitable action (if required). Create accurate and relevant action diaries on the MedipostApp system as per SOPs.
2. Customer
- Furnishing of information and advice to patients with regards to medicine usage.
- Determine patient compliance to the therapy, and follow-up to ensure the patients’ medicine-related needs are met as per SOPs.
- Professionally interact with patients and health care professionals.
- Execute customer service initiatives in the dispensary to ensure great customer experience, driving customer loyalty.
- Meet and exceed customer expectations.
3. Operations
- Efficiently execute all operational activities of the dispensary, including safe and responsible stock management, shrinkage, general housekeeping, and administration in line with GPP and SAPC Regulations and company standards.
- Constant communication with colleagues and management to address expectations, requirements, and compliance.
- Ensure integration and partnership with the clinic, over-the-counter (OTC) healthcare aisle resulting in a full offering to patients regarding their healthcare needs.
- Keep abreast of changes in medical aid procedures and requirements for claims and dispensing.
- Assist management to identify/eliminate security risks.
- Ability to prioritize work to achieve the required daily outcome.
- Problems are identified and escalated through relevant channels.
- Maintenance & adherence to good housekeeping practices.
- Ensure stock and shelves are clean and tidy.
- Manage own time & attendance according to company policies.

4. Receiving
- All processes in the WIC Receiving are conducted according to written SOPs and comply with GPP.
- Accurate checking and capturing of received stock (scanning or via (product description, pack size, unit), batch number, expiry date, and quantity) as per SOPs.
- Stock is checked for damages, counterfeit, and expiry dates as per SOPs and GPP.
- Stock discrepancies are recorded on the documents provided as per SOPs.
- Back orders and urgent orders are prioritized in the workflow.
- Stock is handled with extra care to avoid damages and these damages are reported to the Pharmacy Manager as per SOPs and GPP.
- Accurately complete checklists and document control sheets where applicable as per the relevant SOPs.
- Submit documentation to responsible individual (if and when applicable).
- Accurately and immediately replenish stock after the checking process as per SOPs.
- Accuracy: Adhere to timelines as per SOPs.
- Ability to prioritize work to achieve the required daily outcome.
Qualifications
Grade 12
Experience
Min 2 years' experience as a claiming Pharmacist Assistant.
Ideal
- Retail Pharmacy Experience.
- Customer service orientated.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Good listening and communication skills (verbal and written).
