PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To ensure compliance to legislation, mine policies, code of practices, standard rules, and procedures in respect of safety issues in a designated area of responsibility.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- COMSOC 1 and 2 (Mining) is essential.
- Relevant accident/incident/root cause analysis methodology is essential.
- Minimum of 3 years underground mining experience is essential.
- Diploma in Mining Engineering OR NADSAM is advantageous.
- Must have a valid medical certificate or be medically fit in order to obtain such a certificate.
COMPETENCIES:
- Knowledge of standards and procedures is essential.
- Must have knowledge of underground mining.
- Must have knowledge of risk assessment.
- Basic health and safety skills are essential.
- Must have skills in firefighting, gases, and vapours.
- Administration skills and people supervision are essential.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Ensure compliance with the legal requirements in respect of health, safety, and environment as specified in the Minerals & Regulations and the Mine Health Safety Act.
- Assist with conducting issue-based, continuous risk assessments, hazard identification, and monitoring risk assessments in the workplace.
- Ensure that safety and follow-up audits are conducted and assist in formulating action plans to promote health and safety.
- Ensure proper reporting and investigations on workplace incidents, pre-use safety audit inspections, and implementation of remedial actions that prevent repeated incidents.
- Monitor and make recommendations on the application of health and safety principles regarding the prevention of fires and protection systems in the workplace.
- Monitor and make recommendations on the application of health and safety principles regarding all equipment/machinery, hazardous substances, and environmental factors in the workplace.
- Conduct targeted training and development using given methodology, perform one-to-one training on the job, and coach team members in order to enhance individual performance in the work environment.
- Analyse and report on safety statistics and propose and implement initiatives to reach safety targets.
- Ensure effective supervision of the work unit and staff under one's control.
