The boilermaker is responsible for the assembling, installation and repairs of steel structures.
Responsibilities and duties:
- Read and interpret drawings and sketches to establish required dimensions to be marked on materials and assembled products.
- Marking off and cutting off materials using the oxy-acetylene cutting torch, plasma torch, angle grinders, guillotines, band saws, pipe cutters, and many other cutting tools and machines.
- Develop, mark out, bend and roll using parallel lines, radial lines, triangulation and spiral developments.
- Preparation of material (pipes and plates) for assembling by rolling, bending, chamfering of weld preps, drilling, and punching.
- Assembling prepared metal components by manual arc welding, and bolting.
- Fabrication, repair and maintenance of steel structures.
- Knowledgeable use of most hand tools, portable power tools, pneumatic tools, pipe and plate bending machines (manual and hydraulic).
- Proper and safe use of lifting machinery and equipment such as overhead cranes, chain blocks, chain pullers, slings, shackles and lifting spreader beams and lugs.
