Job Responsibilities:
Electrical Truck Knowledge: An understanding of the vehicle’s electrical systems, including battery charging, alternators, sensors, and power distribution, is crucial.
Diagnosing Engine Problems :
A major part of the job involves identifying issues in diesel engines using specialized diagnostic equipment or by conducting manual inspections. Diesel engines are complex, and problems can range from issues with fuel injection systems to electrical faults or mechanical failures.
Performing Routine Maintenance :
Mechanics are responsible for ensuring trucks remain in good working condition through routine maintenance. This includes changing oil and filters, replacing air and fuel filters, checking and replacing fluids, inspecting belts, and conducting other preventative checks that help prevent more significant issues down the road.
Engine Repairs :
When a diesel engine malfunctions, the mechanic must repair or replace parts such as the turbocharger, fuel injectors, pistons, cylinder heads, or timing belts. They may need to disassemble parts of the engine, diagnose the root cause of the issue, and replace worn-out or damaged components.
Electrical System Troubleshooting :
Diesel engines often include sophisticated electrical systems that manage fuel delivery, starting systems, and emission controls. Mechanics use tools such as multimeters and diagnostic scanners to check and repair electrical circuits, sensors, alternators, batteries, and more.
Transmission and Drive Train Repairs :
Diesel mechanics are also involved in repairing transmissions, axles, and other drivetrain components. This includes adjusting or replacing gears, clutch components, differentials, and driveshafts.
Welding and Fabrication :
For more severe repairs, mechanics may need to use welding equipment to fix cracked engine parts, exhaust systems, or structural damage to the truck frame. Fabrication skills can be crucial when custom parts need to be made.
Troubleshooting and Emergency Roadside Assistance :
Diesel mechanics are often called to provide emergency repairs when a truck breaks down on the road. They need to diagnose problems quickly and perform repairs in challenging conditions, such as on highways or at remote job sites.
