Job Purpose
The Tax Officer is deemed an expert on matters related to tax and accounting. This position is responsible for the tax function at our client, calculating, and accurately completing tax returns, giving advice regarding taxation matters, assisting individuals/trusts/companies with tax returns, preparing other statistical, financial, and accounting reports, and drafting working papers.
Key duties and responsibilities include
- Carry out detailed and accurate computations to calculate tax liabilities/tax returns (complex or simple tax returns)
- Collating, sorting and processing financial information concerning tax calculations and preparation of tax schedules and drawing calculations
- Submission of all tax-related accurate returns, documents, reconciliations, self-assessments and corresponding with clients to provide feedback on tax affairs, assessments, payments, etc. by relevant deadlines
- Compilation of management statements, and annual financial statements and preparing other statistical, financial and accounting reports, drafting of all working papers required for the Annual Financial Statements, Interpretation of evaluation of and reporting on AFS
- Deal with client queries regarding bookkeeping, AFS, Management Statements, Tax, Income distributions, etc.
- Manage the administration of Income/Provisional/Employees/Value-added/Dividend Tax/Estate Planning, etc.
- Correspondence with SARS on behalf of our clients on various matters when applicable, including Objections, Appeals and Alternative Dispute Resolution hearings and other SARS consultations (all tax types)
- Keep up to date with changing tax laws
- Training team members and supporting their related work responsibilities to ensure that the tax compliance requirements of the clients are met to the high standards we set
- Assist the whole billing process via Accounting / Practice Software including the keeping of timesheets
- Perform any other reasonable work instruction/task and adhere to and generate revenue targets
Requirements
Qualification and experience
- Tertiary qualification with at least 5 years of Income Tax Returns and accounting experience in an accounting/audit/financial firm
- Minimum of 5 years of SARS e-filing , Draftworx, Sage Accounting/XERO software experience
- Completed 3 year articles.
- Strong technical knowledge of International Accounting Standards (IAS), International Financial Reporting Standards for small and medium-sized entities (IFRS for SMEs), Companies Act, Income Tax Act, Tax Administration Act, VAT, PAYE and other SARS regulations (inclusive of SARS dispute resolution process)
- Must have worked with a portfolio of clients, having been responsible for client correspondence (speaking directly to clients to obtain information etc) as well as correspondence with third parties (e.g. banks, brokers, financial advisors).
