Preconstruction and Project Engineer
Redheads Engineering Solutions (Pty) Ltd, a leading design-build engineering subcontractor focusing on specialist clad structures including facades, canopies, and skylights , is seeking a qualified Preconstruction and Project Engineer who will be positioned in the Johannesburg North office and may involve travel within Africa.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Preconstruction and Project Engineer will be responsible for developing a complete understanding of customer needs (including budget) in review of prequalification data as provided by sales and providing technical services for projects, including code analysis, structural analysis, design and calculations, coordination of detailing, and obtaining approvals from the client.
Key Performance Areas include:
- Create accurate technical solutions to clients’ needs during the promotional phase of the sale.
- Check the structural performance of projects being bid in accordance with bid documents.
- As necessary, assist with method statements and structural implications of installation schemes as developed/required by the estimating group.
- Select appropriate systems for structure and cladding from Company standards based on price and performance needs as required.
- Develop structural models using available software and building codes as required.
- Receive new projects from sales during TM1 meetings and ask appropriate questions.
- Review all contract documents and building codes to proceed with the design and proper load requirements correctly/efficiently.
- Compose RFI’s as needed to obtain any necessary information not already shown in the Contract Documents.
- Develop structural schemes and cladding details according to the contractual obligations, architectural intent, budget, and time schedules.
- Planning and overseeing shop and fabrication drawings.
- Perform any necessary structural calculations in justifying member sizes and connection details and to produce a calculation booklet for submittal to the client.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Ability to interpret blueprints, architectural intent, and codes.
- BSc degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering with a Structures focus. Master’s degree preferred.
- Two to five years of applicable experience designing steel/cables and/or glass structures utilizing space frames, lattice structures, etc. Experience with steel member and connections calculations, architectural detailing, and various cladding materials.
- Familiar with relevant SANS codes (at a minimum SANS 10400 and SANS 10160).
- Must have an excellent ability to perform structural calculations (connection scales / hand calculations).
- Use of basic computer tools and software (Microsoft Word, Excel, AutoCAD, etc.).
- Experience with STAAD, RSTAB, ANSYS or similar essential.
