The Communities and Social Performance function supports the achievement of Rio Tinto’s business objectives by building strong partnerships based on relationships of mutual trust and respect. This includes the way we engage with communities and the steps we take to identify and manage social, economic, environmental, cultural, and human rights impacts throughout the life cycle of our projects, from exploration, to project development, operation, and closure.
About The Role Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs. Our Communities and Social Performance Area of Expertise (AoE) is Rio Tinto’s technical CSP function. It provides support to the business in building respectful and trusted relationships with host communities that deliver sustainable improvements in social and economic outcomes. The AoE works with CSP practitioners and leaders across the business to build capability, support social performance planning and delivery, monitor and respond to emerging trends, and provide assurance and risk management. The AoE also maintains Rio Tinto’s management systems, CSP standards, and reporting process.
We are looking for a Principal Advisor - Regional CSP (EMEA) to join the CSP Area of Expertise (AoE). You will work closely with site-based CSP teams to guide the CSP practice across multiple operations in the region by providing technical advice and supporting capability development to deliver on the CSP strategies.
This role is a great opportunity for a CSP expert to support the establishment, refinement, and execution of CSP initiatives in support of the Rio Tinto businesses across the region, with the objective of continuously improving our social performance and long-lasting benefit to host communities.
Reporting to the General Manager Technical & Capability within the Communities and Social Performance AoE you will:
- Provide strategic and technical advice in areas such as risk and impact assessment, cultural heritage management, social investment, and other areas by working collaboratively with site-based CSP teams, alongside other AoE team members.
- Provide technical guidance on areas such as implementation of Rio Tinto’s CSP standard, land acquisition and resettlement, consultation and engagement, CSP planning, complaints and incidents management, and other topics.
- Build a comprehensive understanding of the social risk profile in the region by supporting sites in their social risk assessment and management, promoting cross-functional involvement and accountabilities.
- Support site-based teams to integrate CSP considerations into their operational decision-making and problem-solve issues where needed.
- Support the capability development of the teams in the CSP practice, operations, and projects, coaching team members, sharing knowledge, and best practice.
- Provide support for strategic stakeholder engagement and partnerships, as appropriate, within the region.

- Degree level qualification in a social science or related discipline.
- Deep knowledge of CSP standards and systems, risk management, and assurance.
- Minimum of 8 years or more direct operational and/or field CSP experience, including in different geographies and contexts (including EMEA).
- Demonstrated experience in crafting and delivering strategies and delivering results, and ability to drive technical excellence in CSP in regional and asset teams.
- Effective influencing skills when engaging with senior leaders internally and externally.
- Ability to build and maintain strong and trusting relationships and work in a networked organization to achieve results.
- Demonstrated experience in capability development, including coaching and mentoring of individuals and teams.
- Ability to successfully navigate diverse and complex cultural and community challenges.
- Experience in managing multiple projects and deliverables simultaneously, and the ability to prioritize workload.
- A strong external network to bring best practice ideas into the Rio Tinto business.
- Experience working in the mining & metals / extractive sectors.
- Language skills English. Knowledge of French and/or Portuguese will be highly regarded.
- Readiness for frequent travel for on-site support at different projects and operations across the region.
