Duties and responsibilities:
- Develop and oversee a robust research programme at the school with an emphasis on postgraduate students and staff members.
- Establish and maintain strong partnerships and collaborations with other academic institutions and government institutions nationally and internationally.
- Participate in knowledge transfer activities, attracting research income to discipline on a collaborative and individual basis to support high quality research activity.
- Support the department with the strengthening of overall research related electives including research projects.
- Attracting research income on an individual and collaborative basis, to the field or discipline, to underpin high quality research activity.
- Recruit and supervise postgraduate students.
- Sustaining a high standard of academic engagement and staying current with field advancement as required to fulfil the requirement of the position.
- Being of service to other universities e.g. external examining, assisting with curriculum reviews, organising of conferences, collaborations on inter-university projects.
- Being of service to other provincial and/or national stakeholders such as government or NGOs.
- Demonstrating excellent leadership in the creation and accomplishment of the school's strategies in an innovative, inspirational, person-centred manner in the interest of building the standing and stature of the school.
- Maintaining own ongoing growth; incorporating the school's strategies into all relevant facets of their work while also contributing to the development and achievement of University and Faculty strategies within the context of being a research-led university in Africa.
- Develop strategic direction within their own research area while providing over-arching leadership to staff in the Department in terms of their own research.
- Being recognised and serving as an authority in the field of nursing with a strong external research profile as appropriate to the discipline.
- Actively contributing to the development, planning and implementation of activities within the school of nursing.
Inherent Job Requirements:
Senior Researcher:
- PhD in Nursing on NQF Level 10.
- Three (3) years of academic experience at a higher education institution.
- Registration as a nurse (General, Community, Psychiatry) and Midwife with the South African Nursing Council.
- Additional qualification in Nursing Education.
- Proof of registration with the South African Nursing Council.
- Proven experience in teaching undergraduate and/or postgraduate modules in nursing.
- Proven experience in the presentation of papers at national and/or international scholarly conferences.
- Demonstrate potential for obtaining an NRF rating.
- Proven experience in supervision of graduated master’s students.
- A proven research record of relevant publications in national and/or international accredited journals.
- Proven experience as a reviewer for an accredited scholarly journal.
Associate Professor - Researcher:
- PhD in Nursing on NQF Level 10.
- Five (5) years of academic experience at a higher education institution.
- Registration as a nurse (General, Community, Psychiatry) and Midwife with the South African Nursing Council.
- Proof of registration with the South African Nursing Council.
- Additional qualification in Nursing Education.
- Experience at management level, and of leading a large team.
- Proven track record of research in nursing with a research profile commensurate with the level of associate.
- Existing networks and collaborations in nursing, or higher education in Africa and/or beyond.
- Experience as an external examiner for postgraduate degree students.
- Proven experience in presenting research papers at national and international conferences.
- Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in a specific scientific area of scholarship.
- Demonstrate potential for obtaining an NRF rating.
- Successful supervision of graduated master’s degree students.
- A proven research record of at least 10 relevant publications in national and international accredited journals.
- Serve as a member of a national scholarly society OR a national committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels OR show evidence of service as an active member of an international equivalent.
Recommendations:
- NRF rated.
- Proven application and/or successful securing grant application.
- Act as an editorial member of high-quality national scholarly journals.
- Qualification in any field of specialisation will be an added advantage.
- Bachelor's degree will be an added advantage.
- Co-supervision of PhD students.
