Job Primary Purpose
The Vice-Chancellor is the University’s Chief Executive Officer. The Vice-Chancellor is responsible for the effective functioning of the Senate and academic structure, provides strategic direction, leadership, and is responsible for overall operational management of the University. The Vice-Chancellor is accountable to the University Council and is assisted in the management and administration of the University by the members of the executive management team.
Key Performance Areas:
- Provide strategic, transformational, and ethical leadership for the University.
- Strategically direct the teaching and learning, research and innovation, and engagement portfolios of the institution.
- Promote sound relations with internal and external stakeholders.
- Fulfil tasks required by the University Council, governance committees, and external structures.
- Provide leadership on legal and academic administration services, management of people, financial sustainability, risk management, and effective operations of the University.
- Advance the reputation and sustain collaborative relationships nationally and globally.
- Active engagement with the broader higher education landscape.
Minimum Requirements:
- At least 10 years of executive management leadership experience in higher education.
- Recognised academic standing as a Professor or eligibility for appointment to the rank of Professor.
- Track record of visionary, transformational, and ethical leadership.
- A track record of producing research outputs.
- A sound understanding of the governance and management including the operations of a university.
- Experience in exercising academic leadership and management.
- An ability to successfully manage teams, and to empower and motivate internal stakeholders to achieve the shared objectives of the institution.
- Experience in human resources, financial, assets, and new infrastructure management.
- Proven track record of successful fund-raising.
- Proven track record in identifying and managing strategic and operational risks to which the University may be exposed.
- A commitment to harnessing technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship in enhancing the attainment of graduate attributes as a value proposition.
- A proven record of well-developed local, national, and international networks that will enhance and foster the developmental trajectory of the University.
- Sound knowledge of the critical challenges and opportunities in the changing higher education environment in South Africa and globally.
- A clear understanding of the University’s role as an African university, and its commitment to the teaching and learning, research, and engagement project.
- Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively with staff, students, stakeholders, and external agencies.
- Ethical, resilient, and the ability to work under pressure.
- An approachable, flexible, and innovative approach.
