Assistant Factory Manager
The Assistant Factory Manager is responsible for general supervision of all phases of plant operations including production, quality control, quality assurance, maintenance, and health & safety. Responsibilities also include recruiting, hiring, and training personnel, as well as facility/physical plant upkeep and capital improvements. This role involves working closely with the production team to increase productivity and profitability. Candidates must be trained and have at least 5 years of experience, including best practices in both managerial and production platforms.

- Receive instructions from and report to Manufacturing Manager
- Communicate and give instructions to factory staff
- Communicate with Operations Manager, Chemist, and National Warehouse Manager as required
- Monitor and report on operating expenses in line with approved budgets
- Monitor and report on machinery/plant reliability and maintenance team performance
- Maintain and support a superior safety and housekeeping program, including all timely communication initiatives
- Monitor and report on compliance to all Occupational Health and Safety regulations, environmental regulations, and by-laws and insurance requirements
- Product cost management, ensure accurate job costing and maintenance of bills of materials
- Work with purchasing clerk to develop and improve supplier relationships to achieve consistent material availability for planned weekly production requirements
- Support preparation of weekly production plans and schedules to meet demand requirements to achieve stipulated customer service level agreements within stipulated inventory level constraints
- Coordination of quarterly and weekly cycle stock counts and investigation and resolution of stock variances
- Inventory management for factory stock including receiving, storage, and issuing
- Analyse workforce requirements and coordinate the hiring and training of manufacturing personnel
- Production Administration, ensuring relevant production, maintenance, quality, safety, and personnel records are effectively maintained
- Conduct performance appraisals and provide coaching and guidance to all operations employees
- Handling of staff disciplinary, grievance matters, and queries
- Coordinate the relationship with our union workforce and negotiate union contracts as needed
- Maintain security system, staff clocking systems, and access control systems
- Support and promote continuous improvement initiatives
- Assist in projects to reduce wastage and constraints from the production process to improve efficiencies and enhance productivity
- Assist to remove production constraints; allocate human and equipment resources and direct production employees to attain all established goals
- Assist in researching ways to reduce costs while maintaining product quality
- Assist in research on machinery/plant to support product development initiatives and opportunities to improve production processes in a cost-effective manner
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Relevant Tertiary Qualification
- 5+ years’ experience in supervising ten (10) or more production staff
- Excellent interpersonal communication and listening ability
- Demonstrated strong leadership, team building, and advanced coaching skills
- Demonstrated ability to motivate people, assess and develop employee skills
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with ability to effectively interact with production staff and management
- Highly motivated, results oriented, driven
- Ability to confidently and proactively supervise production teams
- Proven ability to implement company policies and procedures effectively
- Competence with computer-based and hard copy administration, record-keeping, and procurement systems
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products, particularly Excel
- Knowledge of procuring materials, equipment, and labour needed throughout the production process (Materials and Resources Planning)
- Ability to work independently under the Manufacturing Manager, and as part of a production team
- Proficiency in quality control, managing budgets, and production costing
- Experience with ISO9001 quality management systems is an advantage
- Strong analytical problem-solving abilities and attention to detail toward solving production-related concerns
- Previous experience/best practices implementing and using continuous improvement/lean tools such as Six Sigma, 5-S, Lean Manufacturing, Transactional Lean, etc. to drive improvement would be preferred
- Demonstrated understanding of the principles and applications associated with manufacturing operations, maintenance, and engineering
- Excellent planning and organizational skills, with the ability to balance production and maintenance needs
- A strong ability to be adaptable and flexible
- Strong decision-making skills, ability to work with teams and lead decision-making processes in a team environment
- Strong understanding of basic labour laws and regulations, OSH Act, and environmental legislation
