Mechanical Engineer

Job Purpose
- Liaison between production and technical stakeholders in the process, striving to maximize equipment performance optimally in a safe, legal and cost-effective manner;
- Through the combination of technical expertise, analytical thinking, and problem-solving acumen driving industrial and manufacturing processes to new heights;
- Bringing innovation and efficiency together to ensure we continuously adapt to technological advancements and sustainability practices;
- Optimizing processes/workflows to achieve excellent performance/efficiency, quality and optimal machine availability/productivity, whilst reducing waste.
Reporting Line
This position has direct reporting to the CEO and offers support/expertise to the Mill Managers and Technical Managers at each mill (*dotted line reporting from Technical Managers to Mechanical Engineer) .
Requirements & Skills (including, but not limited to)
- Valid grade 12 qualification with proof thereof required;
- Fluency in English required (Reading, writing & speaking) (Fluency in Afrikaans and additional official language/s advantageous);
- An engineering degree or equivalent in a Mechanical discipline (NQF6: N Diploma / NH Dip / BSc / B.Eng / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or proven equivalent qualification);
- Advanced knowledge & Proficiency of Microsoft Office required (Excel, Outlook and Word);
- Minimum 5 years’ relevant engineering experience in manufacturing operation (sawmilling industry experience advantageous);
- Understand and apply the applicable laws, regulations and the requirements of specific work environments (OHS Act);
- Well-versed in environmental regulations and committed to simultaneously ensuring the safety of the environment and employees;
- Knowledge of plant process measurement, monitoring, evaluation and problem solving;
- Knowledge & Experience of Shut planning;
- Project management experience and skills;
- Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software and process simulation tools advantageous;
- Competent/familiar with Capex and Renewal budgets and procedure/s;
- Knowledge on Control system development and design;
- Specialised Mechanical skills;
- Knowledge how to analyse failure/s of plant and equipment contrary to the plant standard, identify the probable root cause/s, address these and close incident (Knowledge of problem-solving techniques – Root Cause Analyses);
- Able to perform standby and overtime as required by the business;
- High degree of organization, detail-orientation skills, attention to detail and precision;
- Entrepreneurial spirit, Strong mental ability with deep Analytical, Problem-solving, and Decision-making skills, effective interpersonal & communication skills, self-driven and ready to interact with all levels in the organization.
Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance to relevant legislation and H&S standards within scope of control (including environmental policies and procedures);
- Ensure that applicable engineering standards, procedures and practices are applied;
- Conduct audits to ensure compliance to standards and legal requirements, ensuring legal compliance of all equipment;
- Provide engineering and maintenance expertise, as required, in the investigation of failures and problems raised;
- Drive the Lean Manufacturing principles to develop maintenance programs and best practices as required;
- Contribute to financial decision-making – be involved in compiling of annual capital and maintenance cost budgets and assist in ensuring that these budgets are optimally managed and controlled to ensure efficient and safe operation of the mills;
- Control CAPEX project expenditure and implementation within allocated budget;
- Develop equipment replacement or optimization plans to improve performance, reliability, availability or extend equipment life cycle;
- Investigate incidents and identify root causes ensuring deviations are corrected;
- Maintain a high level of good housekeeping in the overall workplace continuously;
- Involved in Maintenance & Incidental shut planning and execution;
- Involved in long term maintenance planning;
- Utilise the Maintenance reporting functions (PMs) as well as analyse & interpret the information to ensure data integrity is maintained effectively;
- Interact with Technical Managers and Mill Managers to ensure that all PM schedules are applied/up to date;
- Involved in co-ordinating all other maintenance work both planned & unplanned to ensure that machine uptime is maximised & complying with accepted standards;
- Be involved in product and business development opportunities as well as capex projects as required to enhance business development, ensure sustainability and customer satisfaction;
- Ensure effective communication of relevant information between all stakeholders to support effective decision making for the business.
