Vacancy: Workshop & Printmaking Technician (Centurion)
As part of The Open Window MakerSpace, we are looking to appoint a Workshop & Printmaking Technician at the Centurion campus – who will work alongside the MakerSpace Fab Lab technician. The MakerSpace is a state-of-the-art fabrication facility that provides our students, staff, and alumni with access to an extensive array of specialised tools, machinery, devices, and electronic components. If you have a passion for crafting unique objects within a workshop, and for driving experimentation with various printmaking processes while working with and alongside students and academics, then this is the ideal environment for you.

About the position: Workshop & Printmaking Technician Open Window seeks to appoint a technician to aid in the management, operation and maintenance of our in-house Building Block (workshop) and Ink Tank (printmaking) facilities under the The MakerSpace umbrella. What is the MakerSpace? The Open Window MakerSpace is an in-house advanced fabrication facility, which, while open to the public, prioritises the needs of students, staff and Alumni. Our MakerSpace houses three specialised workspaces: The Fab Lab (Fabrication Lab), Ink Tank (printmaking) and The Building Block (wood and metalworking). The purpose of the MakerSpace is to provide training to the Open Window community and to lower the cost of fabrication.
The Building Block offers access to the following resources:
General woodworking equipment and hand tools including:
- Table saw
- Bandsaw
- Mitre saw
- Sanders and grinders
- Drill press
- Spindle mould machine
- Lathe
The Ink Tank offers access to the following resources:
- Etching press
- Screen printing facilities (exposure and printing)
- Letterpress
- Lithography press
Responsibilities & Duties – Technician: As the Building Block and Printmaking technician, your primary responsibilities and duties will include:
- Site induction and induction register (record).
- Assist and supervise students when using machinery and printmaking facilities.
- Training on machinery for supervisors, staff and students.
- Training on printing presses and printmaking techniques for supervisors, staff and students.
- Building Block and Ink Tank management in terms of tooling upkeep and maintenance.
- Arrange maintenance/ cleaning of spaces.
- Service certificates and check-sheets to safeguard users.
- Make sure PPE is in working condition and are issued.
- Ensure all safety standards are maintained during work sessions.
- Implementation and management of control measures.
- Management of material stock in both spaces.
- Keep-up supplier relationships for stock, maintenance and new equipment.
- Arranging deliveries of material, equipment and stock.
- Monitoring the booking and returns of tools.
- Assessing potential opportunities for growth and development within the space.
- Promoting collaboration between faculties.
General Requirements:
- Good time management.
- Practical and hands-on approach.
- Interested in emerging technologies, manufacturing and traditional printmaking.
- Good verbal and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills.
- Enthusiastic about being a “Maker” (designing and building physical things).
- Good understanding of traditional printmaking processes.
- Willingness to research and learn new skills.
Required Competencies (Knowledge and Skills): The required knowledge and skills include, but are not limited to, the following: Minimum requirements:
- The skill-set to work with a wide spectrum of machinery (such as a lathe, woodworking tools, a drill, polishing machine and a spray gun, soldering, welding and brazing equipment etc. to name a few).
- Traditional printmaking skills (etching, lino and screenprinting).
- Knowledge of a wide variety of materials and their applications.
Supporting skills:
- Project Management and Timekeeping Skills.
- Effective online and stock management.
- The ability to read engineering drawings.
Added Advantages and Preferences:
- First Aider Course (will be provided for if needed).
- Experience in manufacturing.
- Working with students and in a team.
- Ability to learn quickly and a passion for new technologies.
- Accountable.
- Attention to detail.
Salary: R190 000 – R230 000 per annum (negotiable, dependent on experience/qualification)
(negotiable within the indicated annual remuneration range, as commensurate with the incumbent’s overall experience and qualification level)
No additional benefits are on offer, other than a Retirement Annuity of which Open Window contributes towards.
