Application Development Manager
As the Application Development Manager, you will need to be well-versed in product development and strategy, but also in programming fundamentals and methodologies.
The job will require you to seek out, validate, and bring innovative best practices and ideas from the outside, with a particular emphasis on application development methodologies.
You will work in an agile environment, building and leading teams of engineers developing applications for various platforms. You will need to provide technical leadership to multiple teams of developers and quality assurance specialists, and help them deliver timeously on sprint commitments, with a focus on quality.
The role is overarching and involves taking care of the entire development cycle and the people involved in it. You should have a track record of implementing best practices such as continuous integration, test-driven development, and continuous deployment, and demonstrated skills in team management and mentorship as well as successful delivery of software projects under deadlines.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Hire, train and mentor new developers, taking responsibility to assist developers in their career path and growth.
- Define and manage the team structure.
- Evaluate team members' performance, provide candid feedback and high impact coaching that enables (and motivates) them to achieve departmental as well as enterprise goals.
- Supervise and delegate duties to the development team in collaboration with the project management team.
- Maintain and improve development standards for the team, which includes all aspects of a modern development CI/CD pipeline.
- Be able to jump in and lend a pair of hands during software development including coding and problem solving.
- Drive the cultural changes necessary to enable a continuous delivery model and foster a strong focus on automation of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
- Participate in code reviews where applicable.
- Coordinate the interactions between the development team and other departments, including support, operations, business development, and finance.
- Ensure that all application development initiatives are well managed and delivered to meet expectations on functionality and timeliness.
- Oversight on ongoing integrations into the production environment.
- Foster and grow the company's behavioural values by setting a leading example.
- Provide oversight over the quality of outsourced development.
- Set development budgets and provide feedback to management.
- Develop and lead a collaborative and Agile software development approach that improves velocity, while maintaining a strong focus on both quality and scalability.
- Create product roadmap/s for department and engage with outside stakeholders in roadmap planning.
- Seek out, validate, and bring to the technology organization innovative best practices and ideas from the outside, with a particular emphasis on application development methodologies.
- Build a culture of innovation and engagement, focusing on strengthening the organization's employer brand.
- Will need to speak to customers on occasion.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Strong knowledge of a strongly typed programming language.
- Knowledge & experience with Typescript, C#, C++ are essential.
- Experience with Go and PHP is beneficial.
- Experience working with agile methodologies – a true believer.
- Has successfully led development and delivery of multiple complex business technology solutions into production that have achieved or surpassed business goals.
- Experience developing and supporting mission critical applications optimized to run in the cloud or virtualized environments.
- Experience of system architecture, technical design, and system and software development technology.
- Expertise with managing application development at scale, employing SDLC methodologies including Agile and Scrum.
- Experience with CI/CD pipeline and builds.
- 10+ years of software development experience.
- Proven work experience (5+ years) as a senior technical leader.
- Diploma or Degree in computer sciences or any other related professional and recognized I.T. qualification. (Experience in the field will be recognized and considered as a substitute to a qualification).
