Quantity Surveyor

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Quantity Surveyor with specialized knowledge and experience to join our team in Cape Town. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing all aspects of the contractual and financial side of construction projects. This includes managing the quantity of materials and labour used for the construction, with the objective of minimizing the costs while maintaining the quality standards. The successful candidate will be involved in maximizing project margin, adding value to the construction process by proactive involvement in procurement, cost management and reporting.

Duties & Responsibilities

Undertake feasibility studies on new developments and improvements including NPV/IRR calculations and accurately compute contract values.
Perform project risk management and evaluate commercial risks of a new-build. Implement the robust procurement strategy and cost control process.
Preparing tender documents and contracts, including a Bill of Quantities. Prepare and analyse costing for tenders considering plans and using best available price. Attend tender briefing meetings.
Conduct tender evaluation. Make recommendations to management on allocation of work to contractors, subcontractors and professional fees.
As an in-house QS, minimise the project cost and hold service providers strictly accountable.
Prepare trend analysis and forecasting of project costs and cash flows relative to budget.
Provide advice on contractual claims and manage variations. Attend all site progress meetings.
Value completed work and issue payment orders, less any retention.
Produce periodic detailed project progress reports and analyse project outcomes relative to the project plan including cost reports, cash flow reports and variation orders.
Undertaking costs analysis for repair and maintenance work.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum B.Eng. or B.Sc /B.Sc Hons/M.Sc degree specialising in Quantity Surveying with a strong academic profile. (MBA would be an added advantage)
Professional QS (Pr.QS)
5+ years’ experience as a QS gained at a medium to large sized reputable Property Construction / Engineering or independent practice.
Proficiency in use of automated QS tools (CCS Candy, WinQS) and good command of Microsoft Project. Good working knowledge of MDA would be an added advantage.
Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
Detailed knowledge of building regulations including relevant legislation, regulations, and ordinances governing property.
Firm understanding of building / engineering contracts and their application ideally with commercial / industrial experience.
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
Strong analytical ability.

Good motivational ability.
