Position : Junior Research Analyst (Remote)

Our client is an independent investment research firm specializing in the tech/media sectors (TMT). They serve top tech investors globally and cover around 120 public stocks worldwide, competing with top investment banks. With offices in London, Boston, Hong Kong, and recently Cape Town, they are building out their analyst team (initially in the semiconductor tech sector) to support covering analysts. Established 24 years ago, our client is a well-known brand in the financial markets, priding themselves on deep technology understanding and strategic thinking. With over 20 analysts, they provide a great platform for learning.
JOB DESCRIPTION: JUNIOR RESEARCH ANALYST
Our client is seeking a junior research analyst who demonstrates analytical thinking, excellent financial acumen, and a keen interest in tech. They have a strong history of developing young talent, and the analysts in Cape Town will provide excellent support during the development period. The role begins with an intense six-month learning curve, focusing on the industry, technologies, and strategic positioning of companies within the sector. Junior analysts are expected to develop a deep understanding of how to model companies, analyze their strategies and management capabilities, forecast businesses, apply valuation techniques, and understand stock trading through economic cycles—all of which are covered during training.
As a junior analyst, you will support senior partners daily with modeling tasks, research writing, forecasting projects, and uncovering data points that assist the team’s coverage. Our client operates as a flat organization where self-starters thrive, and teamwork is rewarded. The position offers ample scope for development into a financial analyst role, with excellent career prospects in a highly sought-after industry.
The team regularly interacts with senior management at the companies they cover, including C-level executives at some of the largest technology companies in the world. Their senior analysts are among the most experienced in the business, with a blue-chip client base, competing against top investment banks. The technology sector is driven by disruptive trends such as AI, robotics, EV cars, and data science, areas where clients seek their expertise to optimize investment strategies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Analyzing public company financial statements and relevant industry data to maintain internal models.
- Supporting senior analysts with research publications and various project work.
- Applying various valuation methodologies and preparing company forecasts and consensus analysis.
- Preparing and presenting investment reports (both internally and externally).
PREFERRED BACKGROUND AND SKILLS
Our client is looking for a candidate with a high-class degree in economics or finance (or a combination thereof) who can demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and strong analytical abilities. The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in the technology sector and thrive as a self-starter. This role will support analysts based in London and Cape Town, requiring flexible hours. - High-class degree in Economics, Finance, Investments, or another relevant field. Honors or master’s degree advantageous.
- Graduate level to 3 years’ experience. Studying toward CFA advantageous.
- Sound understanding of financial modeling, valuation, and analysis.
- Excellent MS Office skills (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
- Programming ability in Python beneficial (data scraping, statistical analysis, etc.).
- Excellent English writing skills.
- A real team player with a strong work ethic.
Location : Remote (Preferred candidates based in Western Cape, South Africa)
Salary offered : R25 000-R30 000 depending on experience.
