Our esteemed client, a leading EPCM firm specializing in mining explosives handling and based in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, with a robust presence across Africa and Oceania, has recently secured a 5-year contract with one of Southern Africa’s largest explosives manufacturers to oversee and manage their explosives handling projects. The company is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Mechanical Engineer with 0 to 5 years of experience for a fixed-term 12-month contract. Key responsibilities will include detailed engineering design of tanks, structures, and piping in compliance with local and international codes, conducting first-principle engineering calculations, and selecting materials based on mechanical and chemical compatibility, cost, and availability. The ideal candidate will be bilingual in English and Afrikaans, possess their own transportation, and hold a valid passport. Travel will be required. The interview process will include a writing skills test, a technical communication skills test, and an engineering fundamentals test.
Requirements:
- Eng. or B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering degree (graduate level) from a reputable institution.
- Proficiency in Autodesk AutoCAD 2D (basic), Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, and SolidWorks Simulation (preferred).
- 0-5 years of experience in mechanical design for process plant equipment.
- Knowledge of P&IDs, piping system design, and plant design (preferred).
- Practical “hands-on” site experience or related activities (preferred).
- Experience with steel structure designs per SANS codes (preferred).
- Strong engineering fundamentals and reasoning skills,

Duties:
- Detailed engineering design of tanks, structures, piping, etc. to local and international codes.
- Perform first-principle engineering calculations (strength of materials, statics, dynamics, fluid dynamics).
- Research, understand and implement new and existing literature and technologies.
- Set-up and run FEA and CFD analyses, evaluate the results, identify the root causes of failure/underperformance, and efficiently implement design changes to achieve an elegant and compliant solution.
- Generate detailed concept sketches and inception drawings with the relevant information required for further detailing by a draughtsman.
- Perform material of construction selections based on mechanical & chemical compatibility, cost, and availability.
- Conduct detailed and systematic drawing reviews and generate formal written comments (GA, Mechanical, Civil, Piping, Structural, & Manufacturing drawings).
- Perform equipment selections (pumps, motors, valves, actuators, piping components).
- Compile detailed equipment lists and datasheets.
- Generate, interpret and comment on process diagrams (P&ID, PFD).
- Provide input on control strategies.
- Conceptualize plant layout strategies based on restraints (access, services, site levels etc.)
- Offer technical support to drawing office, project management, procurement, manufacturing and construction resources.
- Perform manufacturing and installation assistance/supervision on site (local & international), conduct quality control inspections and report the findings.
- Liaise with engineers, project managers and clients via meetings and emails.
- Assist with installation, commissioning, and performance test equipment on site (local & international).
- Pump performance testing.
- Perform site visits and site work (local and international).
- Develop detailed scope of works.
- Prepare budgetary estimates for tenders.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures.
- Ensure designs comply with the relevant regulations, occupational health and safety acts, client specifications, local and international standards.
