Well established company based in Zwelitsha are looking for a dynamic and experienced applicant to join their team.
The Fruit and Veg Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the fruit and vegetable department. This includes managing inventory, ensuring the quality of produce, coordinating with suppliers, and leading a team to deliver excellent customer service. The goal is to maximize sales, ensure freshness and maintain an attractive and organized department.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inventory Management:
- Monitor and manage stock levels to ensure optimal inventory
- Order and replenish stock based on sales trends and seasonal availability
- Track and manage spoilage, waste, and shrinkage
- Quality Control:
- Ensure that all fruits and vegetables meet quality standards
- Regularly inspect produce for freshness, ripeness and overall quality
- Implement and enforce proper handling and storage practices to maintain product quality
- Vendor Coordination:
- Establish and maintain relationships with suppliers and vendors
- Negotiate prices and terms with suppliers to ensure cost-effectiveness
- Stay informed about market trends and seasonal variations in produce
- Team Leadership:
- Hire, train and supervise department staff
- Schedule shifts and manage staff performance
- Foster a positive work environment and promote teamwork
- Sales and Customer Service:
- Develop and implement sales strategies to boost department performance
- Address customer inquiries, feedback and complaints in a professional manner
- Ensure that produce displays are attractive and effectively marketed
- Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and store policies
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the department
- Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure adherence to standards
- Reporting and Administration:
- Prepare and analyse reports on sales, inventory and performance metrics
- Assist in budget planning and cost control
- Handle administrative tasks such as ordering, receiving and documenting inventory
Qualifications:
- Education: Grade 12 or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business, retail management or a related field preferred
- Experience: Previous experience in retail management, particularly in fresh produce, is highly desirable
- Skills: Strong leadership and team management skills, excellent customer service abilities and proficiency in inventory management systems
- Knowledge: Understanding of produce quality standards, supply chain processes and market trends
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry heavy items (boxes of produce)
- Capable of standing for extended periods and working in various environmental conditions (coolers)
- Typically works in a retail environment with exposure to varying temperatures and physical demands
