Job Purpose The Geochemist / Soil Scientist will assist the Associate Geochemist to manage and implement small to medium scale projects or perform tasks of larger projects undertaking geochemical studies primarily related to the mining industry.
The candidate will assist with analysis of large geochemical and water quality datasets and critical interpretation of data pertaining to mining environments. Experience in the analysis of large datasets, including quality control, data interpretation and reporting will be essential as is a general knowledge of mining-related environmental issues, geochemical processes, regulations and policies. They must have an ability to work independently and generate, implement and complete multiple work assignments in a dynamic environment. Occasional field work throughout Africa will be required for site scoping and sampling tasks.
From time to time the candidate would assist the Land Quality & Remediation Team in projects related to the down-stream oil and gas sector.
Min requirements 2 plus years of experience in consulting environment Bachelor of Science (BSc), Environmental Geology/Earth Science and/or a postgraduate degree in a related field, Proficiency in MS Office with intermediate Excel and Word knowledge and an aptitude to learn and work with various digital applications. Masters qualification in relative field will be an advantage Knowledge of PHREEQC geochemical modelling advantageous Previous project management experience advantageous A willingness and ability to travel and conduct fieldwork. Responsibilities Manage and implementation of small to medium projects or whole tasks of larger projects Interpret technical data and information from maps and historical documents Compile technical geochemical reports Undertake project and support administrative duties Undertake desktop research, gap analysis and baseline studies Prepare site H&S documentation and training / induction requirements Undertake site work throughout Africa - groundwater supply monitoring, groundwater quality sampling, collection of waste and extractive materials and soil / sediment samples for geochemistry / soil investigations Undertake conventional contaminated land Phase 1 and Phase 2 assessments Use geochemical modelling software to model source terms Consult with in-house and external clients, subcontractors and specialist laboratories.
Skills/Attributes: Excellent written and verbal communication skills (in English), with demonstrated skill in technical report writing. Excellent time management skills and an ability to multi-task and prioritise tasks. Detail-oriented with a mechanical aptitude and hands-on troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Collate, screen and interpret large datasets. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills. Should be able to work independently as well as in a team and communicate confidently with others. Thrive on unpacking geochemical technical issues to find solutions for SLR client’s environmental challenges.
