Job Description
A reputable investment firm focused on sustainability and impact across the African continent is looking for an ESG Manager to join their team either in Stellenbosch or Johannesburg.
The primary role will be to manage pre-investment ESG due diligence, ESG portfolio monitoring, provide technical advice and guidance as well as value-add strategies in investees companies.
Requirements:
•Post Bachelor’s degree (masters or equivalent) in environmental science or development finance
•10+ years’ experience in ESG consulting, development finance or private equity
•Experience working across several African countries
•Experience in the infrastructure and construction sectors will be advantageous.
•Expert knowledge of relevant sectors and ESG issues
•Insight into the challenges associated with implementing ESG improvements
•Familiarity with the application of IFC Performance Standards
•Familiarity with the World Bank’s EHS Guidelines
•Experience analysing the ESG management systems of companies
Your responsibilities will include:
•Support the investment team in the pre?investment ESG due diligence, including assessing and identifying gaps against the fund’s ESG requirements/policies.
•Appoint and manage external consultants (as required), for complex ESG due diligence and/or monitoring.
•Contribute to the evaluation of investment proposals, including investment committee submissions and stakeholder engagements.
•Support in negotiations with investee companies to ensure that relevant ESG compliance rights are embedded in legal agreements, including ESG action plans (where appropriate).
•Post?investment, collaborate with investee companies to improve their ESG management systems, policies and procedures, including the implementation of ESG
•action plans (where relevant).
•Regularly monitor compliance of investee companies with the fund’s ESG requirements and policies, including the implementation of agreed action plans and/or by attendance of ESG sub?committees of boards (as required).
•Develop ESG training, guidance and toolkits to support the investment team and investee companies in knowledge and responsibilities including awareness of ESG regulatory and industry developments.
•Mentoring and working with more junior team members.
•Support external communication to investors and stakeholders on material developments in the Fund's ESG performance.
•Manage and analyse data collection from investee companies.
•Prepare annual ESG and Impact reports including contribution to the enhancement of reporting and monitoring systems.
•Work on ad hoc projects. For instance, external communications on ESG, and case studies highlighting ESG or Impact value creation.
•Contribute ideas to the ESG strategy at all stages of the investment process
