Job Purpose:
- Plan and coordinate field production activities of pre-commercial and foundation seed with seed growers and plant operations, in order to meet the seed availability and quality standards required. Ensures the efficient use of human resources, equipment, and materials.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Plan and coordinate production planning, grower contracting, planting, detasseling, harvesting processes, cultivation activities that include fertilizing, weed, insect, and irrigation control for foundation seed inbred increases, single cross make-ups, and pre-commercial seed productions.
- Drive field production for license hybrids and parentals.
- Liaise with Foundation production coordinator to do grower selection, contracting, and crop allocations as well as annual field reviews.
- Drive all activities related to the delivery of high-quality foundation seed, including but not limited to pre-plant control, rogueing (off type removal), harvest moisture control, and field sampling.
- Collaborate with seed growers to ensure a smooth transition and flow of product from field to plant.
- Lead ESH efforts according to ISO45001, providing assistance and arranging for resources to promote safety in field operations.
- Maintain field operational records as required by the QMS management systems.
- Drive compliance with quality assurance standards and management system set by ISO9001.
- Utilize a digital mindset, leveraging data as an asset for decision making.
- Record field data in the Velocity platform to manage productions effectively.
- Comply with SANSOR seed certification standards and requirements.
HSE Responsibilities:
- Motivate field employees to wear the correct PPE.
- Drive Safety Operations procedures.
- Report all accidents or incidents immediately.
- Actively record safety observations and near misses.
- Participate in Tier meetings and monthly Health and Safety Meetings.
- Champion a safe and orderly environment.
- Participate in emergency response teams and any other safety or health group established by the site upon request.
- Participate in all required HSE trainings, education, and emergency drills.
- Collaborate in reviewing Field JSA’s and Risk Assessments.
- Drive maintenance on all Bayer equipment.
- Complete checklists on equipment prior to use.
- Ensure grower employees know the hazards on Bayer equipment.
Qualification and Competencies:
- Minimum a diploma or bachelor’s degree in agronomy or 5 years of experience in seed production.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Results-focused with the ability to work on own initiative.
- Strong teamwork capability with flexibility to work across areas and positively influence others.
- Ability to make informed decisions in a timely manner.
- SANSOR field inspection and Phytosanitary certification will be an added advantage.
