As a Refuse Collector, you will take household rubbish and recycling away and collect industrial waste.
Pay Rate and Working Hours:
Hours of work are Monday to Friday 7.30am - 3.30pm
The rate of pay starts at 11.79 per hour and increases after successful completion of a probation period and all training
Full training is provided
Key Responsibilities:
Refuse Collectors who collect rubbish from people's houses usually work in teams of two to five Loaders/Operatives, plus a Driver. The Loader's job depends on the type of bins used.
When standard household dustbins or plastic sack liners are used, one or two Loaders carry the bins or sacks to the roadside. Other Loaders follow with the lorry and lift and empty the bins or throw the sacks into the back of it. New plastic sacks might be left as the filled sacks are collected.
Where wheelie bins are used, householders usually leave the bins at the roadside for emptying. You will push the bins to the back of the lorry where the bins are attached to an automatic lifting and tipping mechanism.
With both types, you will operate controls at the back of the vehicle to compress the rubbish.
You will also take away items to be recycled, such as paper, some plastics and bottles, which are stored in sacks, bags or boxes. In many areas, this is done on a different day from the rubbish collection. There might also be a separate collection for compost bins.
You might help the Driver to manoeuvre (move) the lorry by giving directions and hand signals. You might also assist at the disposal site. In some areas, and by arrangement, Refuse Collectors might take away large items of waste.
You might also deal with members of the public if there are any problems
