Role Overview
The Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing the upkeep, repair, and improvement of all facilities, equipment, and infrastructure. This includes ensuring the effective functioning of mechanical systems, water and power infrastructure, vehicles, the boat fleet, and guest amenities. The role also involves proactive maintenance planning, efficient resource management, and fostering a culture of safety and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure and Equipment Maintenance
Oversee routine and emergency maintenance of buildings, guest accommodations, and staff facilities.
Ensure the proper operation and maintenance of water systems, including pumps, filters, and irrigation setups.
Manage solar power systems, backup generators, and other energy infrastructure.
Vehicle, Boat Fleet, and Equipment Management
Maintain and repair the lodge’s fleet, including safari vehicles, boats, staff transport, and equipment (e.g., pressure washers, pumps).
Coordinate regular servicing schedules for vehicles, boats, and equipment to ensure reliability and efficiency.
Preventative Maintenance
Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules for all assets.
Conduct regular inspections to identify and address potential issues before they become major problems.
Team Leadership and Coordination
Supervise and train the maintenance team, ensuring tasks are delegated effectively and completed to high standards.
Collaborate with other departments (e.g., housekeeping, kitchen, guiding) to address maintenance needs and improve efficiency.
Budget and Resource Management
Manage the maintenance budget, including cost-effective procurement of tools, parts, and materials.
Maintain an organized inventory of spare parts, tools, and consumables.
Compliance and Safety
Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including fire safety protocols.
Conduct safety training and enforce procedures to protect staff, guests, and property.
Sustainability and Environmental Management
Lead sustainability initiatives, such as efficient water usage, solar energy optimization, and waste management.
Ensure minimal environmental impact during maintenance activities.
Emergency Response
Provide swift and effective responses to maintenance-related emergencies, ensuring minimal disruption to operations and guest experiences.
Coordinate repairs during extreme weather conditions or unforeseen incidents.
Key Qualifications and Skills
Essential Qualifications:
Proven experience in maintenance management, preferably within a safari lodge, hospitality, or remote environment.
Strong technical knowledge of mechanical systems, solar energy, plumbing, electrical systems, vehicle maintenance, and boat mechanics.
Skills:
Leadership and team management skills, with the ability to train and motivate staff.
Problem-solving and analytical skills to address complex maintenance issues.
Budgeting and resource management expertise.
Proficient in using maintenance software and inventory management tools.
