Our client is seeking a passionate, well-connected, and driven Venture Capital Scout with a passion for ocean conservation, sustainability, and innovation to join our mission to support ocean-positive ventures and help shape the future of the blue economy, globally.
As a Venture Capital Scout, you will play a key role in identifying innovative startups, supporting entrepreneurs, working as an extension of the of the headquartered team, and alongside the Africa team and our partners in Africa to build a robust pipeline of impactful ventures for our accelerator programs. This position is a 3-year, project based role and will be based in Cape Town.
Activities you can expect:
Conducting in-depth research into the African startup ecosystem to identify emerging ocean-positive technologies and sustainable innovations.
Building and nurturing relationships with entrepreneurs, accelerators, incubators, universities, and industry leaders in the region.
Proactively scouting, evaluating, and recruiting startups aligned with the organisation’s mission.
Conducting initial screenings and due diligence on startups to assess market fit, scalability, sustainability impact, and team capabilities.
Collaborating with the broader team to define selection strategies, evaluate deal flow, and prioritize opportunities for acceleration.
Providing initial mentorship to early-stage founders, offering guidance on product development, business strategies, and scaling solutions.
Monitoring and reporting on the impact of startups in the accelerator program, ensuring alignment with ocean conservation goals.
Participating in events, conferences, and networking opportunities to engage with stakeholders and raise awareness of the organisation’s work.
We look for candidates who strongly believe that companies creating a positive impact in the world will create outsized financial returns towards their investors, and who have a passion for the ocean.
The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of the African startup ecosystem, with a focus on ocean conservation and marine technologies. In this role, exceptional networking, relationship-building skills, and an established network in the African ecosystem are essential. We expect proficiency in evaluating early-stage ventures, conducting due diligence, and providing feedback to help startups scale. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and CRM tools is highly desirable.
We require a degree in Business, Finance, Environmental Science, Marine Conservation, or a related field; an MBA or similar qualification is preferred. Candidates should have 2-4 years of experience in venture capital, startup evaluation, or a similar impact-driven environment.
