We currently have a project requiring a Senior Geotechnical Tunnelling Engineer to join our team.
As the Senior Geotechnical Tunnelling Engineer, you will assist the Project Manager and provide technical design and engineering to the CDE (Chief Design Engineer) for undertaking design and preparing design schedules, design reports, tender and contract documents, bill of quantities, various specification chapters, preparation and finalization of various drawings, technical returnable schedules, construction programme.
The successful incumbent will be appointed to Knight Piésold Sandton to form part of the design team for an 18-month contract period that may be extended based on project development.
Minimum Requirements:
- BSc. Eng/B Eng (Civil) and professionally registered at an internationally accredited engineering council/body, PrEng preferred.
- Minimum 15 years of experience in hard rock mechanics, detailed design and construction supervision of large tunnels and underground structures.
- Familiar with FIDIC Emerald book, and Red book contract forms.
- Familiar with International design guidelines and technical specifications i.e. ASTM, BS, Eurocode, SANS, IS, Austrian standard (ÖNORM), ISRM, ITA.
- Proficient in soil/ rock mechanics and tunnel geotechnical design.
- Ground investigation studies, rock lab and rock in-situ testing, interpretation and preparing GFR and GIR (Geotechnical Interpretive Report).
- Proficient in geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring, back analysis and interpretation of data; laboratory and in-situ rock/soil tests, and Hydrofracture stress measurement in-situ test.
- Proficient in NATM design and CCM, design of tunnel primary lining and support/final lining using analytical and numerical methods i.e. CCM (convergence confinement method) and FEM (Finite Element Method); assessment of various ground behaviours and prediction of system behaviour and support utilization; design of tunnel intersections/junctions.
- Proficient in numerical analysis, finite/distinct element methods, plane strain/axisymmetric, and hardening/softening material properties.
- Proficient in tunnel portal design and slope stability analysis-LEM & FEM-strength reduction method.
- Experience in hard rock TBM geotechnical design and TBM penetration prediction models.
- Experience with TPC TBM software, Tunnelsuit, Tilos, 3GSM software AutoCAD and Civil 3D is a must.
- Must know Rock Mechanics/Geotechnics software, Plaxis 2D/3D, Rocscience (Phase2, Unwedge, Swedge, RocPlane Slide, etc) and Flac 2D.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design management, resource management, budget/cost control, and design quality control.
- Tender and Detailed design of portals, access adits, tunnels and intersections, ventilation shafts, and other underground structures.
- Supervise junior engineers and engineering geologists.
- Prepare and review sections of the GBR (Geotechnical Baseline Report).
- Prepare and review various sections of GIR (Geotechnical Interpretive Report).
- Review GFR (Geological Factual Report), site investigation plan and in-situ and laboratory tests plan.
- Undertake Numerical analysis; Provide geotechnical suggestions for tunnel concrete lining design, design parameters and load cases; prepare and/or review design reports and calculations.
- Prepare and review tender and construction drawings for the underground works.
- Compile Tender documents/ Contract documents, Project Specifications, measurement and payment items and bills of quantity for various sections, tunnel excavation and support, blasting, dealing with water, rock support and geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring.
