The Code 29 Examiner plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of railway operations. This position is responsible for conducting examinations and assessments of operational staff, and rail equipment in compliance with Code 29 standards and South African railway regulations. The examiner will evaluate competency, adherence to safety protocols, and readiness to handle railway operations, contributing to overall railway safety and performance. Key Responsibilities 1. Competency Examinations Conduct assessments for train drivers, shunters, and other operational staff to ensure they meet the required standards of Code 29 certification. Evaluate the knowledge, skills, and performance of candidates in areas such as safety procedures, train handling, route knowledge, and emergency response. Issue competency certificates to successful candidates and document examination results accurately. 2. Safety Compliance and Inspections Perform regular inspections on rail equipment, locomotives, and other railway assets to ensure compliance with safety standards and operational regulations. Identify any operational or equipment-related risks and report findings to relevant departments for corrective action. Conduct safety checks before, during, and after assessments to ensure a safe environment for examinations. 3. Training and Development Support Collaborate with the training department to support the development of training materials and programs for railway staff. Provide feedback and recommendations to improve training modules based on assessment outcomes and observed performance gaps. Participate in workshops, briefings, and training sessions to stay up-to-date with Code 29 standards and industry best practices. 4. Record Keeping and Reporting Maintain accurate and detailed records of all assessments, certifications, and inspections conducted. Prepare reports on examination outcomes, highlighting any recurring issues or trends that could affect safety and performance. Ensure that all documentation is compliant with regulatory standards and company policies. 5. Incident Investigation Support Assist in investigations following any operational incidents or safety breaches, providing insights from assessments and inspections. Participate in root-cause analysis to identify potential training or procedural improvements to prevent future incidents. Offer expert input on safety recommendations and corrective actions related to Code 29 compliance. Key Qualifications Education : Minimum Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent. Relevant technical or safety qualifications in railway operations are preferred. Certification : Code 29 Examiner certification (or equivalent) is required. Experience : At least 5 years of experience in railway operations, safety, or a related field, with specific experience in train driving or operational supervision preferred. Knowledge : Strong understanding of South African railway regulations, Code 29 standards, and railway operational procedures.
