Job title: Clinical Associate (12 Months Fixed Term Contract – Wits VIDA)

Job description : Main purpose of the job:
- To recruit, screen and provide health care to patients participating in research studies and clinical trials according to study protocols and to provide assistance to the medical officer and study coordinator with clinical research activities.
Location:
- Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital and other study sites – Johannesburg.
Key performance areas:
- Recruitment and retention:
- Screening of participants and consenting of participants’ mothers.
- Establish a relationship of trust and respect with the participants’ mothers and the participants.
- Enrolment procedures:
- Perform study-related procedures, blood draws, vaginal and rectal swabs nasopharyngeal aspirates/swabs on infants and young children.
- Explain and guide participants through the self-sample collection process (vaginal and rectal swabbing), ensuring adherence to the procedures outlined in the study protocol.
- Store and deliver swabs and blood samples to the local lab.
- Collect isolates from the local NHLS laboratory.
- Carry out verbal interviews with the mothers or legally acceptable representatives of participants according to SOPs.
- Carry out follow-up interviews with the mothers of the participants.
- Administration:
- Completion of all relevant CRFs of the study.
- Accurately abstract information from the clinical notes.
- Perform quality assurance of study file source data, i.e. clinical source notes and CRFs.
- Make sure that all the NHLS results have been received and captured in the database.
- Administrative duties including procurement of consumables and the supervision of study participants.
- In-hospital follow-up of participants and completion of discharge outcomes.
- Prepare daily and weekly statistics at the study sites.
- Present daily and weekly statistics to the principal investigator and senior study personnel as and when required.
- Verification of logs.
- Customer Service:
- Communicate with external stakeholders around compliance issues as and when required.
- Ensure all customer interaction (Both internal and external customers) is of the highest professional level.
- Respond to emails/queries within two days.
- Act in a professional and friendly manner in all dealings with internal stakeholders.
- Build and maintain authentic relationships with all stakeholders ensuring that all interactions are professional.
- Effectively manage work processes to maintain high levels of productivity.
- Show a high level of customer centricity at all times.
- Effective self-management and performance ownership:
- Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management.
- Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained.

- Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in ongoing training and development activities such as workshops, forums, conferences, etc.
- Vehicle care and maintenance:
- Keep the Wits-VIDA vehicle clean and carry out the necessary checks.
- Driving and delivery:
- Liaise with management for daily transport schedule.
- Confirm that patients have their files prior to being transported.
- Transport patients safely to and from destinations.
- Transport Wits-VIDA staff for home visit purposes.
- Collect and deliver documents and/or goods safely.
- Complete relevant vehicle usage forms in accordance with policy.
- Obey traffic rules at all times.
- Provide any other ad hoc Driver duties as assigned by management.
Required minimum education and training:
- Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license (Code B).
Required minimum work experience:
- 1-2 years research experience.
Professional body registration:
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities:
- Clinical trials experience.
- Good Clinical Practice.
- Excellent clinical skills.
- Computer literacy in MS Word and Excel.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team.
- Attention to detail.
- Motivated, organized, friendly and professional.
Demands of the job:
- Able to work under pressure, meticulous.
- Overtime, speed and accuracy.
- Ability to travel between various sites.
Communications and relationships:
- Maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders at the study site level.
- Facilitate communication between study sites, researchers and principal investigators (local/international).
