Intercape is looking for a highly knowledgeable and experienced National Technical Manager
Who will manage the entire Technical Team across the Intercape Group.
Duties & Responsibilities
Planning and Management of National Technical Strategy
- Plan and draw-up an annual technical business plan.
- Present national technical strategy recommendations and suggestions to board of directors for approval.
- Manage execution process of technical strategy as instructed by board of directors.
- Review current tyre strategy and make recommendations for longer-term solutions.
- Refurbishment planning.
- Management of units.
- Manage cent per kilometer of complete fleet.
Identify and ensure the effective implementation of technical campaigns in order to achieve technical strategic goals. Review and approve technical priorities or needs with senior technical personnel on a weekly basis. Recommendations and assistance with the buying and sign-off of new fleet additions, as well as selling of old fleet.
- Ensure new coach is in accordance to Intercape standards and needs, prior to commissioning of the coach.
- Ensure coaches that are sold are in an acceptable condition for the buyer.
Ensure compliance of vehicle fitness for the entire fleet.
- Ensure Certificate of Fitness tests are done timeously for the entire fleet.
- Make sure all busses are in a presentable condition and cleaned as per standing instructions.
- Ensure servicing schedules for the entire fleet is executed and managed according to company policies and procedures.
Ensure proper control over national company equipment and tools in workshops.
- Review monthly reports on equipment and tools of all technical workshops.
Determine, replace and repair strategy. Compilation of national technical budget and implement financial control measures with regards to the technical budget.
- Workshop fixed assets (example tools, jacks).
- Fleet maintenance – parts, units, windows, tyres, lubricants, trailers.
- Traveling and accommodation.
- Small and major accidents.
- Refurbishments budget.
- Non-revenue vehicles.
Manage and control budget efficiently - Effective utilization of MOVE system.
Manage variance on the technical budget.
- Effective budget management taking into account operational needs and demands.
Ensure all warranty claims are processed - Analyze and sign-off on MOVE warranties report.
- Negotiate optimal warranty fees from supplier.
Monthly budget analyzed and reports provided at Income and Expense meeting as well as MANCO meetings.
Facilitate relationship between Operational and Technical divisions
- Ensure the Technical division meets Operational division’s needs to provide coaches and trailers.
- Ensuring the quality control of the total Intercape fleet with regards to aesthetics, neatness and overall condition is according to Intercape standard.
- Daily inspections and involvement with fleet.
- Being involved with technical maintenance to provide advice and assistance.
- Provide alternative solutions to technical problems and issues (breakdowns, delays on services, maintenance).
Human Capital Management
- Manage the Technical Division.
- Current headcount of technical staff.
- Identify and plan for future needs for expansion of workforce and need for temporary/relief staff.
- Salary and Overtime budget.
- Effective leave management.
- Review the effective and optimal rostering of staff.
- Review and manage the staff discipline process.
- Manage direct reports on a daily basis and provide advice and assistance.
- Availability and open door policy to direct reports.
- Monthly constructive feedback to direct reports on their performance.
- Ensure company performance management system is implemented and executed in division.
- Conduct Performance assessments and feedback for direct reports.
- Ensure divisional staff morale is maintained and optimized.
- Weekly toolbox meetings.
- Quarterly strategic meetings with senior technical management team.
- Inspire positive energy among technical staff.
- Regular depot visits, resolving of burning issues and motivation of staff.
- Staff development is done according to:
- Individual skills needs.
- Business development needs.
- Company skills plan.
- Company skills development strategy.
- Manage the national technical structure with regards to effectiveness and ultimate productivity.
- Assist the HC department in recruiting the correct caliber and quality of employees.
- Support HC department with communication to division regarding project needs.
Leadership and General Management
- Act as leader and mentor to peers and subordinates.
- Ensure effective communication between technical employees and senior technical management.
- Ensure that daily feedback is provided in the morning conferences.
Policies and Procedures
- Technical policies are drawn-up in collaboration with necessary stakeholders.
- Policies and procedures are communicated to all relevant stakeholders.
- Effective management of all technical policies and procedures.
- Equipment replacement policy managed and coordinated.
- Market related research conducted to measure an equipment replacement policy.
Reporting & General Management
- Ensure that daily reporting is done by senior technical management on all technical functions.
- Conduct depot visits and provide feedback report to MANCO and EXCO.
- Provide intelligence to influence decision making in both the operational and technical environments.
- Ensure procurement policies and procedures are adhered to.
- Overall responsible for reporting on all technical related aspects to MANCO and EXCO.
- Regular communication to the COO and EXCO.
- Assists with the compilation of the Technical Director’s report.
Systems & Compliance
- Ensure all jobcards are managed according to company policies and procedures.
- Coordinate the logging of all related information on company system as required by policy.
- Understand all company systems available and value that can be gained from these:
- MOVE
- SOPS
- Intasect
- Mix Telematics
- Booking system
- Revenue system
- Overall monitoring of Technical Dashboard and implement solutions to counter problems identified.
- Ensure internal white-boards are maintained and reviewed.
- Ensure compliance by technical department with all company policies and procedures.
Desired Experience & Qualification
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
- 10-15 years’ experience.
- Tertiary qualification a preference (must be a qualified mechanic).
- Must have a valid Passport.
- Must have a valid driver’s license (Code 14 preferably).
RELATED JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Travel frequently to depots and other offices.
- Be physically involved in all technical related issues and be willing to spend time in the workshops.
- Have a proficient knowledge of the company, its divisions, associates, people, products, service and website.

- Research and provide legal opinions on a variety of issues and new business projects within the business to proactively identify, assess and manage legal risk.
