Department FunctionThe Technical and Design department provides tools and guidance to the business, including standard house types, construction specifications and construction details. The guidance can be formal, such as documents like “Our Approach to Placemaking” and help given through the technical feedback forum, or it may be more ad hoc, with a simple phone call or visit to site to discuss an issue. The T&D team is also involved in the leadership of TW, through tactical or strategic interventions such as the development of a new house-type range, improving our groundworks design or running training programs for our design and technical staff. The T&D team also have a part to play in building the TW community, through events such as the Technical Directors conferences, the Design Competition, and the Design Leads conference. Job summary/PurposeThe Technical Director shall lead the technical function of the Cladding Remediation Team, the function being both the primary contact point for stakeholder engagement, as well as being responsible for the co-ordination of architectural and engineering design for cladding remediation projects across Taylor Wimpey’s legacy portfolio. Their duties shall include the co-ordination and discharge of all necessary conditions attached to both the planning permissions and building regulation/warranty approvals for each project, including applications to the Building Safety Regulator.Primary Responsibilities1. Cladding RemediationMust have a working knowledge of PAS9980, FRAEW’s, EWS1’s, with experience of external wall systems on medium and high-rise developments, preferably gained in a remediation setting.Must be able to manage projects in occupied buildings, both in terms of the design nuances of remediation projects, and the necessary stakeholder engagement required.Must maintain an up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation appropriate for remediation schemes, including agreements reached with national governments.Responsible for department data collection and reporting, both to drive data led decision making and for statutory reporting to government.2. Team ManagementResponsible for the performance of the team in delivering project management, technical design and approvals required for all projects. Must be commercially aware working with established budgets to provide a cost-effective team performance.Ensure that all project meetings with other departments are arranged and managed in a timely and efficient manner, ensuring all relevant action points are noted and recorded (e.g. pre-distribution of information etc.).Ensure that all technical staff are aware of the health and safety implications of every design decision.In conjunction with other Board members undertake monthly site visits.Ensure training and development of technical staff to continually improve performance.Fulfil role of Principal Designer under CDM3 CommunicationCommunicate well with staff, Department Heads, external consultants, and other bodies. Provide technical support to the Production Department during the delivery of projects. Provide technical support to Commercial during procurement. Provide technical support to the legal function in respect of recovery actions.Oversee communications to stakeholders, including proactive and reactive communications, resident presentations, and deputise for the DoCR when required for communication with MP’s, Councillors and Government officials.Advise the Board of Directors on changes in technical matters and / or competitor’s product.4 Financial AccountabilityMust be able to manage budgets, professional fees, and staff costs.Must provide a cost-effective service, carefully controlling expenditure and team overheads.Should be aware of corporate objectives and financial requirements, concentrating on providing forecast profits in line with expectations.Must manage all designs to ensure forecast project completions are achieved.Must ensure that a value management strategy is in place for each project and that it maximises value and manages cost at every design stage.5 People Management & LeadershipMust be able to communicate well at all levels internally within the Group and externally with public bodies.Will be a member of the Cladding Remediation Management team. To directly manage the technical staff, promoting a strong team spirit and ensuring the Department is a key player in the performance of the Team.6 Business Development StrategyShould effectively use resources, programme and prioritise work to ensure that delays do not occur through the life of the project from conception to site completion.Should have understanding of the corporate vision and strategic policies.Must programme all work to ensure the team’s approved forecasts are achieved.7 Management of ChangeThe Technical Director must provide value engineered solutions to problems encountered and encourage innovation and constant development within their team.Experience, Qualifications, Technical RequirementsExtensive experience required in the design, construction and delivery of external wall systems in medium and high-rise developments.Ability to competently challenge fire engineering reports, conclusions and scopes. Ability to critique architectural and engineering drawings Ability to manage external stakeholder communications.
