Job Purpose:
We are looking for a Commercial Underwriting Consultant who will be responsible for evaluating and analyzing commercial insurance risks to ensure profitable growth while maintaining strong underwriting standards. This role involves reviewing complex insurance applications, assessing risk factors, and providing tailored coverage recommendations for clients. The consultant will work closely with brokers, agents, and internal teams to deliver expert guidance, drive underwriting decisions, and support the company's commercial insurance portfolio. Strong relationship management, analytical skills, and industry knowledge are key to success in this role.
Responsibilities:
- Accountability of, and management of, team member performance – including setting/communicating clear goals to achieve business objectives
- Ensure attainment of key operational metrics e.g. SLA adherence, utilization, abandoned calls, rework
- Optimize processes and systems used by the CL Underwriting team
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement (people, processes, systems)
- Support execution of operational plans
- Achieve organic growth targets
- Achieve conversion ratio targets
- Support retention of existing business
- Reporting – team performance, general Underwriting aspects
- Management of client complaints, analysis of root cause, and implementation of corrective actions
- Execution of Underwriting tasks e.g. quotes, amendments, renewals
- Identify training needs of team members and execute on filling knowledge gaps
- Regular One on One Discussion with Team Members
- Liaising between team members and Management
Requirements:
- Matric
- NQF Level 4 – Full qualification (short-term insurance) as set by regulation
- Regulatory Examination Level5 successfully completed
- Minimum 8 years’ working experience within an Insurance Company
- Minimum 5 years’ commercial underwriting experience
- In depth knowledge of commercial products (relevant to STA product suite)
- Demonstrated leadership ability
- Identified/lead continuous improvement within an Underwriting area
- Ability to analyze and interpret data to manage the team, and identify opportunities for improvement
