Production Superintendent

Eskort, South Africa’s leading pork manufacturer with a processing plant in Heidelberg Gauteng and Estcourt KZN, is currently looking for a Production Superintendent for the Vienna department in Estcourt KZN. The position will report to the Production Manager.
Duties & Responsibilities
Qualification:
Grade 12 plus Diploma or Higher Certificate in Production and Operation Management.
Experience:
At least 2-3 years experience, preferably in the food manufacturing industry.
Knowledge Required:
- Basic knowledge of HACCP
- Experience in emulsion preparation will be an advantage
- Knowledge of quality assurance
- Knowledge of production planning
- Food safety and good manufacturing practices
- Ability to report on agreed KPA’s
- Cross contamination
- Hygiene and cleaning procedure
Key Performance Areas (KPA’s)
Staff Management:
- Ensure proper timekeeping.
- Ensure personal hygiene checks are done on all staff before production begins.
- Ensure your staff follow Eskort Ltd’s SOPs and policies.
- Discipline your staff when necessary in line with company guidelines.
- Communicate to staff in morning meetings regarding issues brought to your attention (e.g., customer complaints, production focus areas).
- Utilize a roster to ensure the correct number of staff needed for overtime are used.
- Ensure that all staff are productive at all times.
Process Management:
- Perform hygiene inspection of your department before production begins and sign off the Ecowize Cleaning Hand over register.
- Ensure the quality of the raw material used in your department.
- Start production on time.
- Follow all SOPs applicable to your department.
- Identify bottlenecks in your process and address the root cause.
- Action and reduce bottlenecks.
Production Planning:
- Plan the order of production for your department for each day.
- Plan production for the week considering outstanding orders.
Work According to Machine Capacity:
- Provide hourly feedback to the foreman and production manager on whether targets are being met.
- Report all equipment deviations immediately to maintenance and the foreman.
Ensure Quality of the Product:
- Ensure consistency of your product in terms of texture, temperature, appearance, and quality of raw materials.
- Perform all quality checks accurately and ensure correct paperwork revisions are in use.
- Conduct root cause analysis on all deviations found.
- Verify and sign off every batch as per recipe.
Ensure Efficient Handover to the Next Shift:
- Communicate outstanding issues, difficulties experienced, and new orders.
- Report any unresolved issues to the foreman.
Ensure End of Shift Procedures are Performed:
- Put all raw materials/in-process emulsions into appropriate cold rooms/freezers.
- Ensure all equipment is put away/disassembled and in good working order.
Food Safety Requirements:
- Stop production if any food contamination risk occurs or is expected. Inform Quality department.
- Report any contamination to QCQA coordinator and, in her absence, to the General Manager.
- Manage your department to prevent risks by maintaining area and equipment.
- If you supervise a CCP, ensure product that does not meet critical limits is restricted or processed further until limits are reached.
- Ensure all staff, especially those responsible for CCP, are trained on relevant SOPs.
- Communicate food safety issues to superiors and employees.
Attend Meetings:
- Arrive prepared and on time.
- Have feedback from staff ready for discussion in customer complaint meetings.
- Excuse yourself in advance if unable to attend, providing valid reasons.
- Communicate relevant information from the meeting to staff in the next morning meeting.
