An exciting opportunity has emerged for a Senior Associate (Litigator) at our Johannesburg offices of Lebea Inc Attorneys within the Dispute Resolution department, focusing on Insurance Practice, public and administrative law, and employment law.
Overview
It is a prerequisite that the candidate has proven experience and expertise in insurance law and/or insurance practice , Public and Administrative Law , and Employment Law . The candidate should be achievement-oriented, a team player, willing and able to take instructions and learn, able to think practically, focused, and able to work under pressure in a deadline-driven environment. The role will offer the candidate an opportunity to gain experience in complex insurance-related matters and to develop skills and knowledge in the field of insurance.
The candidate will be expected to review insurance policies and provide coverage and other insurance-related advice and have sound knowledge of Public and Employment Law. The candidate will also be expected to work with clients, counsel, correspondent attorneys, and sheriffs, as well as be involved in and manage elements of pre-litigation and litigation processes (such as applications, actions, arbitrations, and appeals).
Key Responsibilities
- Work closely with team members.
- Consulting and liaising with clients, counsel, loss adjusters, and insurance brokers.
- Giving high-quality legal advice to clients, including:
- Discussing/debating complex legal/insurance issues within the team and with clients, attorneys, administrative personnel, loss adjusters, and insurance brokers.
- Drafting legal opinions, primarily in relation to insurance policy coverage.
- Attending to legal research, primarily in the field of insurance law.
- Interpreting laws, rules, regulations, and insurance policies.
- Analyzing probable outcomes based on legal precedents.
- Attending to the elements of pre-litigation and litigation processes, including:
- Drafting pleadings and correspondence.
- Gathering and compiling evidence and preparing discoveries.
- Participating in the interview of witnesses.
- Preparing cases for trial or arbitration.
- Litigating in civil courts, tribunals, and arbitrations.
- Building and maintaining relationships with clients, attending to business development-related tasks/activities.
- Assisting team members with the preparation of training and/or other presentations, including the writing and publication of articles.
- Maintaining the confidentiality of legal documents and client records.
- Undertaking the legal work to the highest professional and client care standards.
- Administrative function: taking responsibility for the team billing process and working closely with all team members in this regard.
Skills, Abilities, and Experience
- SA qualified and admitted attorney, with a strong academic record.
- At least 3 years post-article experience in commercial litigation and experience/expertise in insurance law and/or insurance practice , Public and Administrative Law , and Employment Law .
- 4-5 years post-article experience will be an advantage.
- A sound knowledge of Insurance law , Public and Administrative Law , and Employment Law principles (non-negotiable) - experience in insurance policy interpretation and coverage analysis, experience in the field of liability insurance and/or experience in the insurance regulatory field will be an advantage.
- Knowledge of and/or experience in the practice of insurance in the insurance market will be an advantage.
- A following in the Insurance, Public and Administrative market and Employment Law; the potential to bring to the team an existing practice will be an advantage.
- A sound knowledge of and experience in litigation/dispute resolution processes (non-negotiable) - court and arbitration experience and a thorough knowledge of the procedural requirements of civil litigation and arbitration.
- The candidate should have the following qualities/abilities:

- A proven ability to write publishable articles (republication of articles with insurance law, Public and Administrative law, and Employment Law content will be an advantage).
- Be proactive and innovative in relation to personal business development and marketing as well as business development and marketing of the team, the practice group, and the firm.
- Display qualities of honesty, integrity, and loyalty at all times.
It is also essential that the candidate demonstrates the ability to understand the needs of the clients and to communicate effectively with them, as well as to manage client relations and practice management in general. In addition, the candidate must be a team player, ambitious, achievement-oriented, focused, and able to work well under pressure in a deadline-driven environment.
