PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / SENIOR LECTURER AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)

OVERVIEW OF THE FACULTY AND DEPARTMENT
The Faculty of Veterinary Science invites applications from persons complying with the relevant requirements for the position of Head of Department.
The Faculty of Veterinary Science, as the only faculty of its kind in the country, has a unique responsibility in training all veterinarians and veterinary nurses as well as conducting relevant and high impact research. The Department of Production Animal Studies is one of five Departments and responsible for teaching, service rendering and research in the disciplines of Production Medicine and Health/Flock health, Epidemiology, Poultry, Ethology and Community engagement, Wildlife and Reproduction. The Faculty is therefore seeking a dynamic leader for a permanent appointment on Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professor level and a four-year term as Head of the Department.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- The strategic and operational management of the Department;
- Planning and managing the academic, research and clinical programmes of the Department, including the training of veterinary specialist residents;
- Promoting academic excellence in teaching and research;
- Recruiting and managing staff of the Department and promoting their continuous development;
- Managing the Department’s budget and raising funds for departmental activities;
- Aligning the vision and programme of the Department with the broader vision of the Faculty and the University;
- Providing and/or facilitating mentorship of young academics in the Department;
- Offering leadership in transformation initiatives;
- The clinical services rendered by the clinicians and specialists in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, surrounding community and satellite clinics, including a 24-hour service in conjunction with the Director of the Hospital.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Senior Lecturer
- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- An appropriate MMedVet-degree and/or equivalent specialty board certification appropriate to the disciplines within the Department and registration with the SAVC as a specialist; or
- An MSc degree appropriate to the disciplines within the Department and registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian and five or more research-based full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author and/or co-author in the last five years.
Associate Professor
- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- An appropriate MMedVet-degree and/or equivalent specialty board certification appropriate to the disciplines within the Department and registration with the SAVC as a specialist; or
- An MSc degree appropriate to the disciplines within the Department and registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian and ten or more research-based full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author and/or co-author, with five of these publications being in the last three years.
Professor
- A veterinary degree and registration with the SAVC or eligibility to register;
- A PhD appropriate to the disciplines within the Department and registration with the South African Veterinary Council or eligibility to register with the Council.
The candidate must possess the requisite criteria as above to be eligible for appointment as Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor or Professor in the Department of Production Animal Studies at the University of Pretoria, the assessment of which is based on several factors, including teaching, research and postgraduate supervision, community engagement, academic administration and academic citizenship applicable to the level of appointment, as well as high-profile in the veterinary profession, management experience, and an appropriate vision for the Department.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Excellent interpersonal, leadership, communication and negotiation skills;
- Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional bodies.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- National Research Foundation (NRF) rating as a research scientist.
REMUNERATION AND APPOINTMENT
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
The Head of Department is a term appointment for four (4) years. External candidates will also be considered for a permanent academic appointment in a suitable academic department.

- The names and contact details of at least three referees (one national and two international) who can attest to your academic stature and leadership qualities.
The University reserves the right to appoint and consult its own referees.
Candidates are expected to make a 10-minute verbal (no technology) presentation to the Faculty Recruitment and Selection Committee on his/her vision for the Department.
All shortlisted candidates might be required to participate in relevant competencies assessments as part of the selection process.
