Vitality Global, a subsidiary of Discovery Limited, is responsible for the expansion of the Vitality Shared-Value Insurance business model beyond South Africa and the UK, serving to fully leverage the assets and intellectual property of Discovery beyond its primary markets. The business forms equity or contractual partnerships with leading global insurers to integrate Vitality and shared value with partners’ insurance and financial services products in the markets where they operate. Vitality Global also operates a business providing wellness solutions to employer groups in the United States. Vitality Global, through Vitality Health International (VHI), is responsible for Discovery’s 25 percent equity investment in Amplify Health, an exciting digital healthcare systems joint venture with AIA. Vitality Global’s businesses reach more than 30 million unique lives across 40 markets, as well as our primary markets in South Africa and the United Kingdom.
About VHI Asia & Amplify Health
Vitality Health International Asia is partly responsible for managing Discovery’s investment in Amplify Health and collaborates closely with colleagues in Amplify Health to ensure that the technology and products Amplify provides to their clients are world class. VHI Asia is also partly responsible for governance in relation to Amplify Health (the Head of VHI Asia is a member of the Amplify Health Board of Directors) and the shareholder relationship between Discovery and Amplify Health.
Role of the Technical Lead, VHI Asia
Discovery’s primary value-add to Amplify Health is the successful transfer of Discovery Intellectual Property (IP), including software systems, from Discovery Health (South Africa) and Vitality Health (UK) to Amplify Health, and enabling its successful deployment in the markets served by Amplify Health, including to the health insurance businesses of the AIA Local Business Units in 11 Southeast Asian countries.
This entails, among other things:
- Working with Amplify Health to help it better understand the needs and demands in-market.
- Understanding of what software Discovery Health or Vitality UK has, or might (co-)develop, that may be of value to Amplify Health.
- Prioritizing the assets in order of importance to Amplify Health.
- Understanding Amplify Health’s requirements for the successful transformation and deployment of the Discovery software system in Amplify Health markets.
- Working with Discovery Health and Vitality Health tech teams to understand the software in its initial state.
- Making the appropriate adjustments to the software to ensure that it is in the correct state to realize the transfer.
This role will focus on Steps 2-6 above, and will make a contribution to Step 1. The essence of the role is therefore working with the Discovery Health and Vitality Health tech teams to drive actions that will make Discovery Health and Vitality Health software systems more easily transferable to Amplify Health, in terms of:
- Productizing code for current assets.
- Defining a commercial architecture and approach that enables the successful transfer of assets to Amplify Health.
- Understanding development pathways for assets, and potentially flexing those creatively, including by potentially co-developing with Amplify Health.
- Simple, effective and standardized documentation to achieve all of the above.
The person in this role will be expected not only to drive the transformation and transfer of specific software assets, but also rapidly to develop operating procedures and documents for the effective standardization of these processes.
In doing so, the Technical Lead will work closely with the tech teams in Amplify Health, Discovery Health and Vitality Health.
Key Purpose
This position is, under the leadership of the CEO Vitality China & Head of VHI Asia, accountable for the successful transfer of software systems from Discovery Health and Vitality Health to Amplify Health, in a manner that makes them materially and measurably more implementable by clients in Amplify Health’s markets than is currently the case.
Roles in the VHI Asia team will be dynamic, so you should be comfortable with being pragmatic and flexible about doing whatever is required to deliver genuine and lasting value to the business. The role is based in Johannesburg, and offers a competitive financial package to the ideal candidate.
It is expected that the assignment would begin on or around August 1, 2024.

Education and Experience
Education
Must have a university degree that is appropriate to the requirements described under “Role of the Technical Lead, VHI Asia” above.
Experience
- At least 8 years of health insurance experience (preferably with Discovery Health and/or Vitality Health).
- At least 8 years of systems delivery experience, as a Business Analyst, Solutions Analyst, Architect, or equivalent.
- At least 3 years of experience in agile systems development.
- Experience working with international clients.
- Solid financial management experience.
- At least 5 years of management experience.
