About Lumax Energy:
Lumax Energy (PTY) LTD, a leader in the solar energy sector, specialises in developing, manufacturing, and supplying innovative solar mounting solutions. We seek a skilled and motivated Mechanical Engineer with at least 8+ years of relevant working experience to join our team. This role involves comprehensive responsibilities ranging from mechanical engineering design to project management, procurement, and client engagement. Your expertise will contribute to creating quotations and Bill of Materials (BOM) lists and designing parts and solutions tailored to various PV mounting requirements. This role demands a blend of technical skills and creativity, offering the opportunity to engage in project management, cost analysis, and mechanical support across teams.
The ideal candidate will be involved in the entire lifecycle of our solar PV projects, particularly focusing on single-axis trackers (S.A.T).
Key Responsibilities:
Mechanical Engineering Design:
- Develop innovative mechanical designs tailored to the needs of solar energy projects
- Generate detailed problem statements to identify project challenges
- Define the scope of design projects and establish clear objectives
- Design and model various components, ensuring they meet functional and aesthetic requirements
- Perform force analysis to ensure structural integrity and reliability
- Conduct strength of materials analysis to select appropriate materials
- Create functional designs that optimise performance and efficiency
- Conduct component cost analysis to ensure designs are cost-effective
- Develop comprehensive engineering system designs for solar structures
- Integrate components effectively into overall system
- Evaluate the design of components based on fit, form, and function criteria
- Establish and enforce quality assurance criteria for components
Project Management:
- Oversee all aspects of project management from initiation to completion
- Develop project plans, timelines, and budgets
- Coordinate with suppliers, fabricators, and resellers to ensure timely materials procurement
- Evaluate and optimise the supply chain to enhance efficiency
- Manage and control material supply to ensure project timelines are met
- Engage with installers to define the scope of work and determine installation costs
- Structure and oversee installation management on-site
- Evaluate typical site layouts and propose design improvements
- Maintain strong relations with installers, ensuring smooth PV project execution
- Monitor project progress and make adjustments as necessary to stay on track
- Manage financial resources effectively, ensuring projects are completed within budget
- Evaluate project quality and implement remediation procedures if necessary
Procurement:
- Source and procure high-quality materials and components
- Engage with suppliers to negotiate favourable terms and ensure timely delivery
- Conduct thorough evaluations of the supply chain to identify potential improvements
Sales and Client Engagement:
- Engage with clients to present project proposals and secure contracts
- Evaluate project layout designs to optimise for cost and efficiency
- Analyze component pricing, redundancies, and allowable margins to ensure competitive offerings
- Create and verify bills of quantities for projects
- Assist in the identification of components and provide support to meet project requirements
ADHOC Duties:
- Perform additional tasks as needed to support the team and company objectives
Requirements:
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree (B.Eng) or Technology degree (BTech) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Experience and Knowledge:
- Proven experience in mechanical engineering design, preferably in the solar energy sector.
- Strong knowledge of force analysis, strength of materials, and functional design
- Experience with single-axis tracker (SAT) component integration is a plus
- Excellent project management and procurement skills
- Experience with local and international procurement of metal and aluminium is advantageous
- Ability to work under high pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with clients and suppliers
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
- Strong knowledge and proficiency in systems design and integration
- Knowledge of systems design, control theory, and basic coding
Computer Skills:
Proficiency in drafting or design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, CFD (Ansys, Simscale), Inventor, or similar.
- Proficiency in engineering tools and Excel calculation tools
- Experience in project management software
- Advanced mathematical capabilities in Excel
