About the Role
Are you an experienced Radiological Protection Engineer looking for a challenging role within a leading fusion energy research organization? UKAEA is seeking a skilled professional to lead and guide technical activities involving radioactivity, ensuring compliance with legal and governance guidelines. This position is vital to the success of our projects, providing oversight and expert advice in accordance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17), Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 (EPR16), COSHH, and EURATOM.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Reporting: Lead regulatory reporting and interface requirements to fulfill UKAEA's legal obligations.
Environmental Compliance: Provide oversight of Environment Agency permits to ensure UKAEA remains compliant.
Best Available Techniques: Support and assist in applying Best Available Techniques (BAT) for all radioactive waste and aerial discharges on the UKAEA site.
Advisory Role: Offer advice and guidance on matters related to IRR17 and safety issues associated with working with beryllium, ensuring all advice is formally recorded.
Health Physics Support: Collaborate with other health physics practitioners to provide comprehensive support and guidance.
Core Accountabilities
Radiological Safety Performance: Manage radiological safety performance, monitoring, and reporting in cooperation with other UKAEA divisions and units.
Team Collaboration: Foster strong teamwork and delivery performance, adapting to a rapidly changing organization.
External Interaction: Work with external regulators and senior UKAEA stakeholders to help shape the future of the fusion industry.
Controlled Areas: Oversee the implementation of controlled and supervised area requirements.
New Installations: Review plans for new or modified sources of ionising radiation, ensuring proper engineering controls and warning devices.
Equipment Management: Ensure regular calibration and maintenance of monitoring equipment.
System Checks: Manage periodic examination and testing of safety features and systems of work.
Training and Mentoring: Provide training and mentoring to Health Physics staff to ensure compliance and high performance.
Budget Responsibility
Technical Management: Responsible for the technical management of work packages exceeding £200k.
Qualifications and Experience
Leadership: Proven leadership experience.
Education: Degree or equivalent in a relevant STEM subject with demonstrable engineering experience.
Radiation Protection: Extensive experience in radiation protection within a nuclear or highly regulated industry.
Project Management: Experience working on major projects as a technical lead and contract manager.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to persuade others.
Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Certification: Current certificate of competence as a Radiation Protection Adviser.
Mentoring: Experience in mentoring colleagues and contributing to the development of training courses.
Desirable Qualifications
Chartered Status: Chartered status with a professional body or equivalent endorsement.
Additional Qualifications: Health and Safety or Project Management qualifications.
Professional Membership: Member of the Society for Radiological Protection (SRP).
Innovation: Evidence of delivering innovative solutions with commercial awareness.
Team Experience: Experience working within multi-disciplinary teams.
SharePoint Proficiency: Proficiency in using SharePoint.
Other Duties
Emergency Response: Act as an on-site and RADSAFE emergency responder.
Representation: Represent UKAEA at fusion events, national and international forums, and working group meetings, contributing to talks, posters, and papers (some UK and international travel required).
