Full Time, Day/Night Rotation, 12 hour day/night rotation + every 3rd weekend.
This position is responsible for clinical functions of the Obstetrics and Family Health Department in accordance with hospital standards, policies and nursing practice Standards of Care.
Coordinates the clinical activities and processes within the OB Department
Provides direct nursing care to antepartum, labor, postpartum and nursery patients.
Provides nursing care by demonstrating the use of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation and evaluation
Acquires knowledge of and monitors patient’s condition
Communicates patient’s condition and changes appropriately
Assumes responsibility for carrying out the plan of treatment/ provider’s orders
Communicates provider orders and order changes to appropriate personnel
Cares and guides patients through labor, delivery, and postpartum, while applying critical thinking skills
Provides care to patients during transport to other facilities when deemed necessary
Organizes priorities and delegates activities
Applies effective communication skills with medical staff, hospital personnel and family members
Facilitates staffing of the department and communicates staffing needs to appropriate personnel
Assists providers in performing procedures; assures plan of treatment is administered (i.e. medication, documentation)
Participates in provider rounds
Assists department members and members from other departments with patient cares/services
Provides nursery care and serves as a resource to other staff caring for newborn and postpartum patients.
Assures the organization and cleanliness of work area, including completion of checklists and assurance of equipment availability and function
Follows infection prevention guidelines
Assists in inventory control functions
Performs charging functions
Record information on the patient's medical record and keeps record accurate and up to date
In absence of Unit Secretary, assists in the performance of departmental clerical tasks
Communicates department needs to appropriate personnel
Assists in performing quality control and quality assurance functions
Assists in statistical reporting
Assists with selection, use, maintenance and repair of department equipment
Provides individualized patient and family teaching
Acquires knowledge of medications and drugs being used
Assists in monitoring narcotic medications
Administers medications, treatments, observes patient response
Reviews and interprets diagnostic data
Writes, updates, and individualized care plans
Participates in shift report and patient hand-offs from department to department
Assists with orientation of new employees
Completes annual competency, skills training, and educational requirements related to role
Provides education and support to patients and family members related to patient self-care, infant care, breastfeeding and safety.
Utilizes referral process for social services according to policy
Floats to assist Med-Surg Department when OB coverage is not necessary
Registered Nurse currently licensed to practice in the state of Iowa
Associates Degree in Nursing or BSN
NRP certification required
BLS certification required
STABLE certification preferred
Child and Dependent Adult Mandatory reporter Training required
