Responsibilities As Game Design Lead
● Managing a team of 3D modelers, developers, concept artists, audio designers and
UI designers. This includes providing feedback, fostering collaboration, and filling in
the gaps of skills.
● Assigns tasks, ensuring each designer is working on appropriate elements based on
their expertise and the project's needs.
● Facilitating communication between designers and other departments to ensure all
aspects of the game align with the design vision.
● Developing initial game mechanics, systems, and level designs based on the
project’s goals.
● Ensuring that the game’s mechanics, narrative, and overall design remain consistent
with the established vision and creative direction.
● Creating Design Documents: Writing and maintaining detailed design documentation
which will serve as a reference for both the design team and other departments.
● Constantly reviewing and refining the game’s design based on playtests, feedback,
and technical limitations. This may involve adjusting core mechanics or adding new
features.
● Leading the creation of early-stage prototypes to test and refine new game
mechanics, systems, and ideas. This allows the team to experiment and iterate
before committing to future implementations.
● Ensuring that gameplay elements are balanced and adjusting mechanics as
necessary based on testing feedback.
● Regularly meeting with the team to identify potential issues and integrate solutions
into the game design.
● playtesting and gathering feedback to iterate on designs, identifying areas for
improvement, and making changes.
● Addressing design-related challenges as they arise, from gameplay issues to the
integration of new features.
● Ensuring that all design elements come together cohesively and the overall
experience feels polished.
● Coordinating with the production team to ensure design tasks are completed on time
and within scope, while also prioritizing features based on project milestones.
● Managing the scope of the game’s design to ensure it aligns with the team’s capacity
and project deadlines. This includes recognizing when to cut or revise features to stay
on track.
● Progress tracking to monitor the progress of design tasks, ensuring that all work is
moving forward according to the sprint goals. Help the team stay on track and ensure
transparency.
● Stand-ups: Leading or facilitating daily Scrum meetings (stand-ups) for the game
design team. These quick, focused meetings allow team members to update each
other on progress, discuss blockers, and set goals.
● Sprint Planning: Working with the team to plan and prioritize work for each sprint.
This involves breaking down design tasks into manageable chunks and ensuring they
align with the broader game development goals.
● Leading sprint reviews to showcase the completed work at the end of each sprint.
This involves demonstrating the design progress and adjusting the design approach if
necessary.
