Overall Purpose of the Job:
The Attorney: Community Law Clinic based at the IIE VC (Varsity College) Randburg campus, will provide legal services and advice to clients, managing the delivery of the Work-Integrated Learning module XBLAW8419 to our final year LLB students, and assisting in developing our relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
The following qualifications are required to be considered:
- Admission as a Legal Practitioner of the High Court of South Africa, with at least two (2) to five (5) years litigation experience.
- Ability to take on Candidate Legal Practitioners as a Principal an advantage.
- Willingness to travel locally.
The ideal candidate will have the following additional attributes and competencies:
- A demonstrated passion for social justice and supporting the rights of vulnerable persons.
- Excellent writing and communication skills, including establishing and maintaining contact with affected communities.
- A calm disposition and proven primary focus on serving the interests of clients in need.
- Languages:
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Proficiency in (or working towards learning) local languages an advantage.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
- Experience in Magistrates Court litigation. Some experience in High Court litigation an advantage.
- A demonstrated passion for supporting the rights of vulnerable persons.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and listening skills.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Demonstrated ability to work well with a team.
- Knowledge of human rights and public interest law.
- Writing, analytical, and time management skills.
Role Comprises:
- Assist in the day-to-day running of the Law Clinic, overseeing roll-out of community advise desks and associated legal education outreach training.
- Assist in Networking and presenting at seminars and conferences.
- Assist in the coordination, teaching & supervising the training of Candidate Legal Practitioners & LLB students on the experiential Law module XBLAW8419.
- Engage in advocacy efforts related to community legal issues and promote legal education and awareness within the community.
- Assist in broadening of the IIE VC CLC Randburg regional footprint.
- Assist in the development and implementation of the clinic's overall strategic plan, in alignment with the organisation’s mission and goals.
- Ensure the provision of high-quality legal services to clients, including conducting intakes, assessments, and referrals.
- Build and maintain relationships with community organisations, stakeholders, and partners to enhance the clinic's outreach and impact.
- Represent the CLC in the Gauteng region in public forums, media, and professional associations to enhance its reputation and influence.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records and clinic operation.
