The Environmental Officer plays an important role in the preservation of the environment.
They will be responsible for managing environmental aspects for the implementation by subcontractors according to regulations, IFC Performance Standards and The Company Health, Safety, Environment and Social (HSES) Standards.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Address and supervise EIA requirements in line with local and international standards.
- Identifying environmental incidents, conducting investigations.
- Conducting the environmental awareness training.
- Manage all conditions set out in the Environmental Authorization and EMPr.
- Manage all data that comes from environmental monitoring activity.
- Evaluate test results and make recommendations for maintaining compliance with local norms and standards, as well as IFC standards.
- Coordinate with the Site Manager, HSE Coordinator to ensure conformity with the environmental and social management plan.
- Inspect and Audit construction site for environmental management plan implementation and compliance and monitor Contractors with respect to environmental obligations.
- Supervise third party / subcontractors in the maintenance of monitoring programs and environmental management.
- Overview and coordinate environmental operations in order to ensure permit renewals and regulatory compliance.
- Keep documents / permits / licenses relating to environmental policies and regulation up to date.
- Ensure proper reporting to National, Provincial and Municipal stakeholders.
Knowledge in ISO14001, mine closure, rehabilitation and biodiversity management will be advantageous.
Education and Technical Skills Level:
- At least 3-5 years of experience working in a similar position.
- Must have a sound knowledge of environmental legislation.
- Basic knowledge of environmental and/or public health principles and technology acquired through applicable formal training or combination of education and experience.
- Ability to conduct routine inspections and investigations.
- Ability to collect, record and interpret data.
- Fluent in English.
- Strong grasp or fluency in other local languages is a plus.
